14 Awesome Couples (Part One)

Variations on a Love Theme

Here’s an entire blog post I drafted last December 28 (yes, because it’s good to document a good idea before it evaporates). I just read the cute Valentine couple feature that the Style Bible team did (yay to the stylish pairs!) but I’m sure you all wouldn’t mind a variation of the same theme. ‘Tis the Season for Happy Hearts!

Who KT Loves: These 14 Awesome Couples

Being a certified loveaholic who happens to be single this V-Day, I have decided to make a list of 14 couples that I really like. They are the epitome of LOVEHARMONYSTYLECOMMITMENTFUNHUMOR and all those dang things that make a spark turn into a long-term fireworks display.

So I welcome you to The WhatKTDId First-Ever 14 AWESOME COUPLES AWARD! Winners get free his-and-hers ice cream treats worth P500 from my favorite, Sebastian’s Ice Cream. (They rule, we drool.)

Why come up with this Award? BECAUSE I CAN! And when I grow up, I’m gonna be 1/2 of a SUPERAWESOMECOUPLE just like these guys :) Hmm, I stand corrected – I’m gonna be one whole of two wholes that make a whole. (Labo.) I do believe the equation for great relationships is this: 1 + 1 = 1. Bad math, but really – it is what works the best.

One thing I’ve learned from being fabulously single: Dating yourself can be super fun – but you get sick of yourself after awhile, LOL. Case in point: You can’t buy yourself cute boyfriend sweaters. Buying yourself flowers is fine, if you don’t mind getting a weird reaction from the florist. You can’t cuddle yourself – because that would be just plain stupid! So… yay for Cool Couplehood!

And the Couples Are…

1. John, politician ♥ Barbie, interior designer

Married for 3 years, 10 months and counting…

John (politician) <3 Barbie (interior Designer)

John (politician) <3 Barbie (interior Designer)

Why it works: “‘Cause we are so different yet the same. ‘Cause we put in the time and effort. ‘Cause we both want it to work! ;)

KT’s note: I was one of the chaperones on their first date. I told Barbie from the get-go that this one was a keeper!

2. Lex, social entrepreneur/consultant ♥ Yelle, social entrepreneur

In a relationship for 2 years

Why it works: “There’s a lot of love, fun and happiness that goes around — we love how life has become one big adventure. We respect and support each other and it’s cool to be committed to the same things (be it to the relationship and the future+dreams that we want to build). We give each other the space to move and at the same time share & enjoy things & experiences together.”

KT’s note: Two very independent souls, they are both making a difference as individuals, and as a couple. They’re big music fans too.

3. David, businessman ♥ Mai, interior designer

Married for 3 years 2 months and 5 days

Mai and David in Paris

Mai and David in Paris

Why it works: “We have an exciting and blissful marriage – we just love being together even when we’re doing nothing and just hanging at home. Our best moments are spending time with each other, creating memories and reminiscing. Now that we have Alexa Isobel, our one-year-old daughter, we are truly, truly blessed.”

KT’s note: They’re also featured in Style Bible’s Made for Each Other Valentine feature. I didn’t mind including them again on my list!

4. Luis, editor ♥ Yvette, writer

Dating for 8 years

Love in black and white: Luis and Yvette

Love in black and white: Luis and Yvette

Why it works: “We don’t have the same favorite books or music or movies. One of us loves fine dining and the other prefers fast food. One of us wants to see the world while the other would rather stay home. And yet it’s not a case of opposites attracting. The differences do add some spice, yes, but so do the many shared joys and inclinations. In the end, we work because of a mix of things, including: A willingness to accommodate each other’s quirks, a craving for late-night keema, equally bad senses of humor, a fondness for hamsters and because much more often than not, we make each other happy.”

KT’s note: They both have six Palancas combined: Luis has four and Yvette has two. And they wouldn’t mind if their future kids don’t grow up to be writers.

5. Matt, student ♥ Janthina, student

Dating for a year and a half

Why it works: “Our relationship has been very transnational (i.e. short and long distance). Ultimately, we are very attracted to each other and we both do what’s best for our relationship. We have fun eating, cooking, traveling, getting massages, watching movies, talking politics, shopping, picnicking, snowboarding, and generally laughing and goofing around a lot.”

KT’s note: You won’t miss this couple when they enter the room – they’re both very good-looking, smart and stylish!

6. Mike, musician ♥ Kooky, recruiter

Married for almost 2 years

Mike and Kooky are coconut heads

Why it works:

a. “We seriously love music!”
b. “We have fun being with each other, playing with our kids and being just like them.”
c. “We enjoy being ourselves when we’re together.”

“It’s a whirlwind romance turned forever : ) — and KT set us up!”

KT’s note: Yes, I did set them up. The moment I met Mike, I already knew he was perfect for Kooky! Then she didn’t show up for their date. Thankfully, another friend set them up again. When something is meant to be, it’s inevitable!

7. Thad, college professor/musician ♥ Xiomara, illustrator/cartoon character

Together for 10 years, married for 7

Xiomara & Thad: Two clotheshorses and a nekkid dog

Xiomara & Thad: Two clotheshorses and a nekkid dog

Why it works: “We will never know the exact minute we fell in love with each other because it has always been there. There is some friction created by our unique characteristics, but we acknowledge this and it brings us into balance. We respect and support each others’ ideals and dreams. Oh, and it helps that we’re both dead sexeh.”

KT’s note: Yes, they’re both dead sexeh. Louisiana’s finest.

Stay tuned for the second half of this entry later!
