But my first love, really, is music. I was that precocious kid who learned how to sing at two and played a ditty on the keys at four, and the rest is history. (You may check out the KT Music fanpage on Facebook for the whole story.)

Many people say that you never end up with your first love. Some say that you always go back to it. And I am one of those who did. I don’t regret it.

Call me a two-timer. Or a dilettante. But I don’t care, I am happy that I can pursue both.

Good News on the Music Front

I have great news – my album, ‘Long Overdue’ finally goes into the recording phase this April 1st. I’ll be spending my Holy Week at Sound Creation Studio, my first choice, what with its splendid Yamaha grand piano.

I was there a few weeks back to record a demo, and I was happy to know that the great Ryan Cayabyab was the last person to touch those keys!

I will be posting regular updates on my debut album on What KT Did – please support the album when it’s finally out!

Two Gigs in March

I only have two gigs this March so I can focus on work and album prep, and I do hope you guys can catch at least one of them.  Both will be held at certified indie rock hub Cafe Saguijo, 7612 Guijo St., San Antonio Village, Makati. Log on to www.saguijo.com for the road map so you won’t get lost!

As I am writing this, I am waiting for some orders to be ready for my flight back to Manila in a few hours. I have to make this quick because I am on grandma duty tonight.

Ever since my grandpa died in 2008, I sleep next to my grandma whenever I come home to Cebu.

Today she wasn’t feeling too well; her blood pressure shot up. She got dizzy on her way out of the bathroom and no one was around because I was at a meet-and-greet event, and she got rid of her nanny just earlier today. She was on her knees when she called out for help. Good thing my parents were home.

She is eighty years old and is such a sweet, sweet woman. She made clothes in the sixties, and she likes to brag that I take after her. She always has little knickknacks waiting for me whenever I visit, all these old trinkets to add to my accessory collection, these really lovely vintage shirts, the most amazing retro sunglasses.

My great-grandma lived to be a hundred. I hope my grandma does too.

Tonight I am reminded of how youth won’t always be on my side, and that I need to start eating right and exercising. And that my loved-ones won’t always be around.

So I hold my grandma’s hand and we tell each other “I love you” over and over again until she falls asleep.

I have decided to step on the brakes and not fill up my schedule to the brim and not be all over the place like I usually am.

There’s more to life than all this busy-ness.

IYFE Winner Mich Dulce at her recent Send-Off Exhibit at Greenbelt 5

Mich bested seven other finalists vying for the title, candidates from Libya, Turkey, Sri Lanka, India, Russia, Bangladesh, and Lithuania.

Mich receives a £5000 grant to head a project in partnership with the British Council.  The past week, Mich and the other IYFE finalists got to meet industry professionals and tour leading organizations in the fashion industry.

Mich, aside from being a talented designer and milliner, is also a part of the band Us-2 Evil-0, whose debut album ‘Dirty Debutantes’ is making waves in the local indie scene. They even scored this latest Greenwich commercial via their track ‘This Mighty Heart Attack’:

Good Lord!  I remember being giddy over having a hundred followers there.  Now there’s five freaking thousand!  Thanks to all of you who have been subscribing to KTweets all this time.

Our 5000th follower is this lovely girl who goes by the name IzzaRealista in Tweetland.  I can see that she’s a fellow Bisaya too, from the sunny isle of Davao. She just tweeted me because I followed her back!

Just a Twitter Observation

The irony is that you don’t really feel like there are that many people who are interested in your updates;  you’re only present to the ones who actually interact with you.  Sometimes when I’m tweeting with my girlfriends, it seems like it’s just the two or three of us chatting – we neglect to remember that x number of people are privy to our online conversation!

There are other Twitter personalities who have a gazillion more followers out there but I am very, very grateful for the 5,006 (oops, six just in) who have bothered to click on my Follow button.

Hadn’t slept a wink, so I was dead the entire flight. When we landed, I bumped into Tessa Prieto-Valdes, my fairy godmother, who said she was knocked out on the plane too. Here’s a pic of us by the luggage claim area, which I also posted on my Twitter.

I went straight to work and wore the same shirt throughout the day. Gawd. I changed into a pair of culottes given by my good friend MayanFM from Bangkok. (I like mixing prints, BTW.) Here’s a shot of said outfit:

My friend Shawn said she likes me in pants, but I personally like wearing dresses or skirts. Those culottes were pretty comfy, a happy middle between a pant and a skirt. I’m thinking of having some culottes in my summer collection. (Would you wear culottes?)

KT’s note: These two actually manage to work together – an admirable feat in itself! They are partners in two companies (Heim Interiors, a design firm headed by Rossy; and Heima, a home design and lifestyle store).

Why it works: “We like eating, driving around with no particular destination, we’re passionate about each other sometimes to the point of driving each other crazy. What really brings us together though is food! We like spending time talking about the future.”

KT’s note: I witnessed the beginning of their relationship and I’ve seen how this couple evolved and dealt with all the hurdles the past three years. They started this year right by tying the knot! Remarkable! Congratulations, guys!

Why it works: “Our theory is that because we’re both bunso, we are equally affectionate, silly and pa-cute with each other. We talk to each other about everything – we are open to each other and are each other’s best friend. We are different enough from each other to keep things interesting, so we’re always learning from each other, but we share the same core values and dreams.”

KT’s note: As of press time, the couple is being one with the tarsiers in Bohol. And Deepa was dressed in KT when she walked down the aisle two years ago.

Why it works: “We’re legally bound and we couldn’t be bothered to reverse that situation. We communicate with each other to the point that we wish the other would just shut up already. And we’ve been just plain ol’ lucky since we met twelve years ago.”

KT’s note: That answer was obviously uttered by Carlos. At first, they will seem like an unlikely pair but spend a bit of time with them and you’ll see: Their dynamic as a couple makes complete sense.

KT’s note: Vince and Frances are expecting their first baby later this year. And oh, they managed to get the word ’sex’ into my blog! Sheesh.

To Cap It All Off

I have many, many wonderful ‘couple friends’, but these 14 made the list because I saw something really special in them. They’re fun, have a great rapport with each other, and they’re REAL. What’s most inspiring about these pairs is their commitment to making things work, no bones about it.

It’s easy to fantasize about love and its trappings, but the truth is, relationships require a lot of time and effort. And communication. And patience. And kindness. And humor. And forgiveness. And all those things that have two people butt heads with each other and still choose to be together after that.

A close friend of mine says, “I wouldn’t wish love on my worst enemy!” And he says that with conviction. Because love, really, is taking someone for who they are and who they are not. Not just the good stuff, but the unpleasant bits as well. I’m not just talking about habits or quirks here, but circumstances, issues, why, even friends and relatives, too! (Ok singletons, stop bitching, we’re actually in a very good place right now, LOL.)

Until my number’s up, I will be content making lists like this one and living vicariously through these awesome couples.

And, as I mentioned in Part One of this feature, the best relationship equation really is 1 + 1 = 1.

Who KT Loves: These 14 Awesome Couples

Being a certified loveaholic who happens to be single this V-Day, I have decided to make a list of 14 couples that I really like. They are the epitome of LOVEHARMONYSTYLECOMMITMENTFUNHUMOR and all those dang things that make a spark turn into a long-term fireworks display.

So I welcome you to The WhatKTDId First-Ever 14 AWESOME COUPLES AWARD! Winners get free his-and-hers ice cream treats worth P500 from my favorite, Sebastian’s Ice Cream. (They rule, we drool.)

Why come up with this Award? BECAUSE I CAN! And when I grow up, I’m gonna be 1/2 of a SUPERAWESOMECOUPLE just like these guys Hmm, I stand corrected – I’m gonna be one whole of two wholes that make a whole. (Labo.) I do believe the equation for great relationships is this: 1 + 1 = 1. Bad math, but really – it is what works the best.

One thing I’ve learned from being fabulously single: Dating yourself can be super fun – but you get sick of yourself after awhile, LOL. Case in point: You can’t buy yourself cute boyfriend sweaters. Buying yourself flowers is fine, if you don’t mind getting a weird reaction from the florist. You can’t cuddle yourself – because that would be just plain stupid! So… yay for Cool Couplehood!

One of us wants to see the world while the other would rather stay home. And yet it’s not a case of opposites attracting. In the end, we work because of a mix of things, including: A willingness to accommodate each other’s quirks, a craving for late-night keema, equally bad senses of humor, a fondness for hamsters and because much more often than not, we make each other happy.”

KT’s note: They both have six Palancas combined: Luis has four and Yvette has two. And they wouldn’t mind if their future kids don’t grow up to be writers.

KT’s note: You won’t miss this couple when they enter the room – they’re both very good-looking, smart and stylish!

6. Mike, musician ♥ Kooky, recruiter

Married for almost 2 years

KT’s note: Yes, I did set them up. The moment I met Mike, I already knew he was perfect for Kooky! Then she didn’t show up for their date. Thankfully, another friend set them up again. When something is meant to be, it’s inevitable!

Together for 10 years, married for 7

Why it works: “We will never know the exact minute we fell in love with each other because it has always been there. I was an intermittent Alexander McQueen fan. Sometimes I was, sometimes I wasn’t. Not because I questioned his genius; it has always been unquestionable. Deemed as the one with the ‘best skill set in the industry’, looking at his work from a technical point of view always took my breath away. Being someone who didn’t go to fashion school, I am easily flabbergasted by the expertise of those who have.

With McQueen, sometimes I really ‘got’ it, sometimes I’d be like, ‘What the hell was that?!?’ That was the context of my ambivalent fandom. The shock value card was something McQueen played to the hilt – coupling exquisite beauty with the grotesque, and every now and then, the ridiculous. (I thought the wild animal/crustacean/armadillo look on the ladies was exciting on the ramp, but in real life, way too much.) Don’t get me wrong, I understand the theatrics of the runway and couture. But I suppose I’m one fashion fan who constantly asks herself, ‘Would I actually wear that?’ Again, context is everything.

I can imagine Kate Moss, Lady Gaga, Anna Wintour in their stylish devastation as we speak. Contrary to popular belief, the fashion world is composed of human beings. In all our supposed frivolity and bad rap from some of those outside our industry (remember Mo Twister’s recent hate post?), we have feelings too, and McQueen’s tragic death is one of those moments where we press the pause button on the Superficial Control Panel.

May we not glorify harakiri just because another master has opted to take the dark route. It’s a choice he made. And there’s always some kind of sick romanticism involved in trying to grasp what final thoughts prompt someone to really, actually take his own life. (I know of people who broadcast suicidal tendencies but never seem to seal the deal.)

It’s easy to piece stories together. It’s quick to deduce that, oh, McQueen was overwhelmed by the consecutive deaths of two of the most significant women in his life: His mentor/muse, the fiercely flamboyant Isabella Blow who singlehandedly jumpstarted his career immediately after his grad show at Central St. Martins, and his lovely mother. Of the two, it was crazy Issie who took the high road on her own volition; Mum succumbed to illness.

Or perhaps it was the grief compounded with the pressure to outdo himself with his latest collection. This is something I understand, somewhat. Those who are truly passionate about their craft will feel that deep despair at one time or another, only because the stakes are high and there is nothing like expectation (others’ and your own) to cripple the creative mind and instill fear+loathing+insecurity just when you need it the least. You truly are your own worst enemy. I’m not privy to the ins-and-outs of the echelons of the fashion world, but I can surmise that McQueen’s biggest saboteur was himself.

We don’t really know, and we will never really know.

What I am almost sure of, though, is that bosom buddies Lee and Issie will be very pleased to be reunited at some undisclosed location right now.

Mes amies, the ‘French Mafiettes’ Caroline, Sarah, and Liza came to visit too. I had them try these cute headpieces from Mich Dulce, who happened to be at the booth next to mine. Style and romance: Too-cute fashion couple Daryl Chang and Mano Lotho (image model for Rajo’s new W line for Wharton) caught having a sweet moment. I discover that Mano is actually related to our flamboyant stylist friend Lotho Lotho! My friends Juddha and Earl dropped by during dinner break at UCC and gave me a present! I did the clothes for their recent wedding in Jerusalem. My new assistant David wearing a vest that he designed and crafted himself. What KT Wore: I bumped into fellow designer Tippi Ocampo just before closing time and I bought this cute belt-cum-headpiece from her Pret-a-Party line. I just bought this cute dress from Tita Lulu Tan-Gan’s booth, too. Instant outfit change, thanks to my versatile Leg Love footless tights in black. (Yes, contrary to popular belief I do wear black stuff!) Having an eyeshadow moment before we leave for Cubao. David says I carry too much makeup in my bag! I have trouble choosing between palettes so I bring a lot with me. As soon as we arrive in Cubao X, this man invites me, Denise and Wiji to help him show off his abs to the ladies. (Strange but amusing things always happen in that place.) Team KT alumna, graphic artist Nice Buenaventura-Alvero by the artworks displayed at Heima Store’s LOVE:2010 Exhibit. Featured artists are Zeus Bascon, Mica Cabildo, Kat Medina and Tof Zapanta, whose limited edition canvas prints used Heima’s choice of colors. I was making progress on the blogging, learning Wordpress and doing some consecutive posts. Then I had another case of LH (Life Happening) and before I knew it, I had a SEVEN-day lag at What KT Did!

It’s not an excuse. But I suppose I can only blog when my mind is present to it.

I’ll make another post today. I have work now but when I’m done, I can prolly write about yesterday. True enough, if it ain’t fresh, it’s easier to procrastinate in the blog world. I’ll do it. Stay tuned.
