Love, Hate, and Lavender

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Lavender is a fragrance I have a love and hate relationship with. On most days, I love it but there are some days (and products) that make me feel the exact opposite about it. Here are some of the products I prefer, and help me maintain a positive attitude towards lavender: Woods of Windsor Lavender Perfumed Drawer Liners (P795, Essenses), Badger Lavender and Orange Lip Care, P295, Essenses, and Herban Essentials Towelettes, P645/20 pieces, Aura Athletica in Power Plant Mall.

Glam Goth

Monday, August 25th, 2008

I may be the last person you’d expect to see go goth but I must admit, I’m excIted about this beauty trend. You see, this year’s goth is a lot different from before.

One no longer has to wear the scary eyeliner filled eyes or clearly unforgiving matte lip anymore, and goth can now be worn in little doses. For starters, you can try coloring your hair a deeper shade of brown or forego the blonde highlights, and go for blue black streaks instead. Second, the black lip gets some extra shine (see www.ysl.com for their “pre-order” only black lip gloss), and third, nails can now be painted in dark hues like eggplant and midnight blue.

Fabulously Filed

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

My nails are painted more often than they are bare but on the rare occasions that I do decide to sport just-buffed nails, I rely on Orly Double-Time Shine Nail File which you can use to shape nails and buff the surface so that nails end up with a clean, glossy finish sans polish.

Bold Eyes

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

When I want to dress up my eyes for an evening out, I like to bring out MAC’s Pigments. These wonder eye hues are great when applied wet—the finish is glossy, and the color goes on extra strong.

Moisturize, Moisturize!

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

We’ve reached the first “ber” month so I am officially switching to a heavier and creamier moisturizer since my skin tends to get extremely dry once the weather becomes a bit cooler during the last three moths of the year. La Mer (P12,500 for a 60ml pot at Rustan’s) is one of my favorites—I love how it seems to be able to cure all forms of skin concerns like pimple scars, flaking, and even redness, and a tiny amount goes a long way. Make sure to apply it the right way though. Most people think that you have to slather it on like a regular cream but what you must do so that you don’t end up with a greased-up face is to take a pea-sized amount, rub them onto your palms, then press your palms onto your face.

Luxe Candles

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

There was a time when I couldn’t fathom how a candle like Diptyque’s could cost $50!! Fast forward to today though, and I simply cannot get enough of these luxe candles! They may blow the budget but hey, at least they’re long-burning, and make your entire room smell heavenly. Worth every peso or dollar, I say. Aside from Diptyque (P2450), there’s also a Chocolate Truffle one from Laura Mercier, (P1950) and a really luxe one from L’Artisan (P9450) which comes with a leather case made by Bottega Veneta, no less! I found all of them in Rustan’s, if you’re keen on picking one up.

Beautiful Brows

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

I’ve always been obsessed with my eyebrows. In high school, I remember over-plucking them because that was what was “uso” then. These days, however, I like to fill them in so that they look lush a la Brooke Shields. I’ve also noticed that fuller brows make me look a tad bit younger. Hey, I’ll take all the help I can get.

My fave brow powder is the one from Mistine. It can be ordered thru Abby Cua at cel. 0918 8002888.

Dick Page Exclusive: A vision in color and light

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

As the new Artistic Director of Shiseido the Makeup, Dick Page will be enhancing the global colour collection across the board—from the visuals to packaging, to product formulations. His initial focus will be on the advertising campaigns for the Spring and Holiday Collections of 2008. Here’s a quick Q&A with him that I stumbled across.

In your view, what should makeup do for a woman?

Makeup is meant to enhance. I like the word cosmetics in its truest sense, meaning that it is on the surface. I think it is a very positive idea to think about how you can play with how you choose to look. There are all these different aspects of expression, which are about personal choice and individuality. You tell a story about yourself.

What is important to you in makeup?

Healthy color is probably the most important thing to me. That was something that drove me mad in the Marc Jacobs show when we didn’t use any blusher, so the faces all looked very blank. I love this look when you come in from the cold and you get this bright flush. There is a good way of saying it in French: ‘sang sous la peau’ or blood under the skin.

Will you still find the time to work on the fashion shows?

I will always find the time. It is so important to me, it’s like my testing ground.

What is your favorite Shiseido product?

I really like the Hydro Powder Eye Shadow. I use it a lot as a highlight on the lip and on the cheek. I also really like the brown Eyeliner Pencil, it is an excellent product. It sounds odd but sometimes we take the simplest items for granted.

Do you have a favorite lipstick color?

The rose beige Praline Perfecting Lipstick (P21), which has about the right amount of grey. It’s a good staple color, not too candy. I prefer cream lipsticks. Shimmer lipsticks are interesting but they have a time and a place.

What is your ideal of beauty?

There is no ideal because it changes all the time. People who are expressive, use their faces and are communicative inspire me. Too much perfection is boring. Botox is probably the antithesis to my ideal of beauty.

Cheap Beauty Thrills

Monday, August 18th, 2008

I’ve added a few products to my long list of cheap thrills:

Pantene Hair Fall Control Shampoo, P80, supermarkets

“I noticed a significant reduction in hair fall after the first use alone.”

Myra E Hand and Body Lotion, available at supermarkets

“I love the light texture of this skin-silkening lotion.”

Caronia Nail Polish, P30, department stores

“Surprisingly chip-resistant, and comes in all imaginable shades.”

Deserted-island Must-have

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

If I could bring only one thing to an island, it would have to be The Face Shop’s Pore Minimizing Serum. This wonder products erases lines, fills in pores, and mattifies skin all at the same time, and isn’t too expensive at P550/tube.
