Shop Saigon

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Writing this at the conclusion of a weekend trip to Saigon  with the girls. (There’s nothing like an all-girl shopping marathon.)

The mission was to by fabric for my cousin’s coming wedding. Her good friend Patty Morato-Roa will be designing the entourage dresses and we were given free-hand in choosing the colors, textures, etc. So we set off to Hai Ba Trung St., to comb through a block full of fabric shops.

Thank goodness we had a local with us to translate and set us straight with the price conversion. (Converting $ to VND is mind boggling.)

Cousin decided on plum and magenta with hints of rust as her color scheme.

Peg from www. verawang.com

We found the perfect colors in charmeuse and were able to buy in bulk on the spot.

Floral appliqué on violet tulle

In the next shop we came across the last 2 meters of tulle with a beautiful rust and purple flower appliqué. After much deliberation, and a couple of long-distance calls, we decided that it would be the perfect accent.

Three stores and three checks off the list.

Rows of embroidered, sequined, and hand-painted fabric

One shop had an array of the intricately embellished and embroidered tulle in all sorts of patterns and colors. Most were sold pre-cut (usually 2 meters), paired with satin fabric, for Au Dais (pronounced “ow yay”), the traditional Vietnamese dress. It costs about $40 to have one made and they can get it done in about 3 days if you’re willing to wait.

Embroidered white tulle

Considered using the white tulle in above photo for her wedding dress (it’s beautifully accented with gold threads). But it was vetoed by her wedding gown designer, Joey Samson, after we told him that the tulle of this particular one felt pretty stiff.

However, couldn’t very well leave without buying a piece or two (or in our case more) for future use.

Green sequined tulle with satin

Grey soft tulle with sequins and embroidered roses

There were scores of silks, chiffons, lace, linen and more. Between trying to pick out the best from a gazillion rows of fabric and trying to converse with the not-so-english-profficient sales staff, it was a major adventure.

At the end of it all, we managed to find everything we needed. Even found beautiful lacquer at Dong Khoi St. (usually not a good idea because it’s a main tourist street but the pieces at Saigon Crafts were quite unique).

Got lost and found a hole-in-the-wall shoe store with the coolest shoes. Bought 5 pairs, each! But that’s one find I’m keeping to myself. Teehee!

Higher Up

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Last Saturday was the launch of my good friend’s bar, Attica. I pretty much expected the usual throng of Manila socialites — or “social heights,” according to a friend, a phrase that has now become my favorite of the moment — celebrities, reality stars, ballers, shotcallers, those big in Japan, and those trying hard to make it big anywhere. Ooh, and MTV.

The attire was modern Victorian, or something, and more or less everyone showed up channeling their version of romantic goth, i.e. black, lace and sky-high heels. Chanel, boots and vamp nail polish were ubiquitous as well.  A couple of partygoers were in black tights, tight pencil cut skirts and corsets, which proves that local fashion is indeed en pointe, regardless of our boring seasons.

The boyfriend and I enjoyed free-flowing drinks for the majority of the night, and most kids feasted on Chef Rolando Laudico‘s (of Bistro Filipino fame) yum-o tapas and took full advantage of the photo wall to showcase their versions of period-piece wear, Pinoy-style.

Check out Attica Bar and Lounge at A.Venue Hall, Makati Avenue for a classy good time. I hear ’90s hip-hop nights are in the works, too — can’t wait to get some Biggie ear candy. Congrats, Hans!

Beauty Steals

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I love finding beauty bargains–they make me feel strangely accomplished and proud, like I’m in on a secret (and that I’ve just one-upped the world, even with something as globally inconsequential as, say, fig-scented linen spray). And since I’m constantly bombarded with beauty products escalating in their extravagance and on the constant quest to outdo each other in fabulosity, I sometimes reach a point of saturation where each lip gloss is just as nude and shiny and blah as the 247 others before it. So when I come across a tried-and-true that won’t break the bank, yes, I am indeed ecstatic.

A makeup artist and good friend of mine (names withheld to protect the uptight) clued me in to Ever Bilena’s Color Pencils, P55, and divulged that it was a staple in her kit (ed’s note: I snoop inside, and true enough, there it lay, worn to a stub.). I tried it and was blown away by the results–such integrity, such smudgeability, for something that cost just over a dollar. My favorite way to wear it: fully rimming the upper and lower lashlines, and then topped with a metallic gold pencil. The effect is pure Alberta Ferreti at the A/W 2008 runways, very reluctant beauty.

Try it! Check out their other budget steals while you’re at it; the best thing about beauty is that its brandless when worn.

Am pretty, will date?

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Eligible bachelorettes, listen up: Pond’s has hooked you up with a chance to win a date with two of today’s yummiest stars, Ding Dong Dantes and Piolo Pascual (Ed’s note: Where was this option during my TGIS fan days, universe? Where?). All you need to do is snail mail in an empty pack of any Pond’s White Beauty product, with a recent, colored, half-body photo (looking your fightest, most pinkish-whitest) and your name, age, address, phone/mobile numbers and email. Oh, and make sure your fabness is between 18-35 years old, AND include the date of your choice — either Ding Dong or Piolo, just one! — to get in the running. Two lucky ladies get a surprise Pond’s-arranged dream date, with a bonus of P100,000 cash, too (how sweet a deal is that).

I had the pleasure of meeting them at last week’s Pond’s press conference, and just so you ladies know, they’re even hotter in person. And even with Ding Dong’s slight hand injury, he was still ever the gentleman, giving a handshake with his left.

(Feels like I’m 15 again. Iñaki+Bianca 4Ever..!).

So sorry, I digress. All entries must be mailed directly to P.O. Box 727, Araneta Center, Cubao, QC 1135. Mallrats may drop off their submissions at all Pond’s Dream Date Booths in participating malls. Everything has to be in by 5pm of November 15th, though, so hurry hurry hurry!

Spotted!

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Look what I got in the mail!

This time around, we’re less concerned about the identity of the new girl sitting beside Mr. Humphrey (she’s not Serena, that’s for sure!), and more interested in her clutch.

Looks like Gossip Girl‘s stylist Eric Daman has zeroed in on Celestina-Tina Maristela-Ocampo‘s line of elegant purses that are made of the most luxurious materials (croc skin, Mother-of-Pearl, and stingray to name a few of her usual ingredients).

Want to get up close and personal with one of these minaudières? Head straight to Celestina’s ground floor boutique in Greenbelt 5 in Ayala Center, Makati City. You’ll find even more beauties to oggle at.

Little Miss Minaudiere

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

I’ve always been fascinated by Judith Leiber’s Swarovski encrusted creations (http://www.judithleiber.com/), particularly the more fun shapes like the Wild Cat, the Cupcake, and the Fan in her current collection.

You can imagine my delight when I stumbled upon these at The Ramp in Crossings.

The kitty cat bag is just so darling. I remember rushing backstage to get my hands on a little felt cat purse with a green crystal eye right after one of Mitzi Quilendrino’s shows for Alliance Français. This jeweled version’s hit my soft spot.

Sitting right beside it was this Spinx purse that was equally divine. Imagine this with the perfect LBD and sculptured heels?

Of course, minaudière’s are all form and no function, but I think I could last an evening with just a tube of gloss, tissue, and my credit card in tow.

Boot Camp

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

One of the things I love best about the rain is dressing for it. The moment I wake up to a downpour, I plan my outfit around whichever pair of boots I’m loving at the moment. (Currently it’s a pair of flat, leather, motorcycle boots that I snagged at Aldo.)

A friend once gave me “the look” when I mentioned that I loved having an excuse to wear boots in Manila. The notion of wearing boots in the tropics was apparently a little off for his sensibilities.

As someone who’s been caught walking in the rain one time too many, I’ve come to appreciate being able to walk freely through puddles. The back of my calves stay dry and mud free. (I’ve actually been experimenting with raincoats lately but haven’t found the perfect one just yet.)

In Hong Kong, at the slightest drizzle, the streets are crowded with Wellie-wearing folks, sploshing around in the fanciest rubber boots. When Style Bible intern Gerry Dy showed me the site for Pluey’s (http://www.plueys.com/), I thought of what fun it would be if women became more style-savvy about their rain gear and started stomping around in these.

And then Rajo Laurel sent his models out wearing rubber boots in citrus prints and dots for the Inquirer Fitness & Fashion Show. The lightbulbs in my head started popping.

Why not, right? If the gals in England have made enough of a style statement wearing their Wellies through the mud at Glastonbury, why haven’t we adopted the look? I call it fashion’s attempt at practicality (or perhaps the other way around). It does rain for nearly half of the months in a year here.

The only dilemma, I suppose, would be where to stash these wet weather friends when you get to dry land. Or do you just wear them all day?

COMING SOON…STILL

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

September 20, 2008

To all of you who were raring to celebrate Coke Light’s formal launch of Style Bible, believe me when I say we share in your disappointment at having to postpone. Let’s call it following in the fashionable footsteps of our big sister, Preview magazine, whose Best-Dressed Ball 2008 was also postponed under similar circumstances.

This is not to say that Style Bible’s coming out party is an official no-go. The party’s still on, so stay tuned.

Meanwhile, it’s been a great two weeks of being publicly online for all of you and we hope you keep coming back as we’ve truckloads of shopping tips and juicy news to share.

Tied up in cable-knots

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Yesterday marked a milestone for me as I sat in front of Mr. Philippe Charriol himself (yes, the Big C, the very one). Dressed in penultimate CEO casual wear – pink sports jacket, upturned collar, très chic and tailored to perfection – M. Charriol exuded an easygoing luxury, very much like his brand itself, and greeted everyone personally with a firm handshake and a warm, affable demeanor. To be on the receiving end of a jewelry giant’s personal handshake is a very, very powerful feeling (aka “He said my name. OMG.”)

The occasion for this exceptional meet and greet? The launch of Charriol Paris Pour Femme and Pour Homme Eau de Toilette, first-ever in the world (as in, the whole of Earth. They haven’t even launched in motherland Switzerland!). As immensely flattering as this was, the editors in us just had to know why we were so special. The lovely Sophie Richecoeur, Area Manager for Cofinluxe, Paris, graciously shared that it was Charriol’s way of giving back to the massive support it’s received from the Philippine market (nota bene: the brand’s been in Manila for 25 years, as long as it’s been in existence), one of its biggest in Asia. The launch also coincides with Charriol’s 25th anniversary, so basically everything’s a glamorous silver-year celebration, with the new men’s and women’s fragrances highlighting it all.

While I ride the starstruck wave, stay tuned for site updates on the liquid gold that is the Charriol fragrance. I couldn’t stop sniffing myself after; finally, my first foray into the luxury house!

Bravo Rajo!

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

just got home from Rajo’s Gala…the one he’s so graciously blogged about on Style Bible to share the fun of planning it with all of you. (Check the Fashion blog. It’s a must-read!).

I’m all worked-up and I really can’t sleep as it was such a great show.

In an earlier article I did on Rajo for Preview’s December 2007 issue, he showed me a letter written to him by Bea Valdes. One thing I remember clearly was how she gushed about these beautiful beaded pants from one of his shows, saying that once she tried them on, she simply couldn’t take them off. Tonight he showed a variety of beaded pants that made me understand all the more why she was so taken by them. They’re really gorgeous and any woman who has the confidence, and the legs!, to pull it off should certainly hie over to House of Laurel to snag a pair.

I liked the little touches of his personality that I saw in the show.

The extra-large, black, abanicos three models used were exactly like the one he carries with him at all times, like a boy scout. (Let me tell you it has kept all of us cool in many a make-up melting situation.)

The appearance of model Melissa Frye in a jeweled halter, feathered capelet, and high-waisted, skirt-like trousers called to mind one of Rajo’s sketches. (Pose and all!) How’s that for actualizing what’s on paper?

I liked how his sewers, cutters, and beaders joined him on staged for the final bow.

I liked how large prints of his sketches, like portraits, decorated the foyer.

I liked how most of the women in attendance made an effort to wear a dress by Rajo.

(Special mention to the beautiful black and white vintage Rajo gowns worn by Apples Aberin-Sadhwani and Celine Lopez, as well as the lovely beaded bra lines on the gowns of Solea‘s Emi Jorge, and Ruffa Guttierez.)

I guess you could say it’s my turn to gush.

As someone who’s been following his preparations since June, It would be safe for me to say that the night turned out to be everything he planned and more.

Congratulations Rajo!

Stay tuned for complete runway photos from the show.
