If You Love Me…

…Won’t you let me know?

The updates on this here blog have been few and far between, mainly due to the onset of summer event season (and I don’t mean out-of-town trips or poolside sunning sessions, although I have not been lacking in that department as well [thanks, guys!]).

I hosted my own little backyard BBQ last week with good food and good company: vodka, orange steak c/o my very own partner in crime, burritos, kebabs and what not. Oh, and the inner nazis were brought, yes they were.

But lest thou thinkst that I’ve mutated into food and entertainment blogging (!), I pose a question: how do the rest of you dress and do your makeup when hosting your own festivities at home? My grrrlfriend Anna always has it down pat with her kicky, boho style (Ed’s note: she also insists on covering her cute little freckles, which I personally think should be celebrated); other grrrlfriend Chow kept it chic and crisp in all white, accentuated only by her ethnic purple-and-green Aranáz; and island babe Dane was all about the casual funk, with matching DIY-ed, studded blue clutch to boot.

I, in turn, punctuated my splashy, Pucci-inspired maxi with a Luxotica bib necklace and tan wedges. And this thing on constant rotation during the evening:

I swear: when in doubt, go M.A.C. The Sugarsweet Tricolour Gloss in Consume Me, P1100–it is in fact, as cute as it looks–is really one of the good guys (No tacky after-feel! Shrimp kebab, come hither!).

Until I get the energy to host another home fête, though, pre-fabricated club nights will suffice. So if milling about in your garden shoes isn’t quite your thing, all you rock buffs out there might wanna come join at Rock 101 Mondays @ Attica, where the music actually treats you right. The boyf (read: Orange Steak Boy) and several of my annoyingly talented friends got tired of requesting tunes from DJs, they made a separate night of their very own eargasms. We’re kiiinda bratty like that. The music is fierce and (cough) quite girlfriend-approved, too, so no, you won’t be jolted out of your seats. Unless you want to be.

Anyhoot, in the meantz, don’t forget to vote for our Style Stars using our spankin’ new poll button–a tad bit addictive, that thing.

Fashion Lessons to Live By

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

It’s been a few days over a month since my best friend passed away, which is my general excuse for not blogging as much as I should.

Anyhow, I’m not going to wax poetic on the meaning of life or share any morbid views about death (this is a fashion blog after all). However, I have come up with some musings on life that do apply to the generally superficial world of fashion. (Allow me this concession. You just might find it interesting.)

Point 1: Stop saving that outfit.

You know how you have this awesome outfit that you’ve been saving for that perfect occasion? Wear it. Everyday should be a fashion fest, if only to enjoy looking great on a daily basis. On a melancholic note, you may never find an occasion that meets the standards of said outfit and the ensemble will eventually be forgotten. What a waste of perfection!

Point 2: Why not repeat? Who cares!

I’m so very guilty of avoiding wearing the same outfit again within a 6 month time frame. But in reference to point #1, if you like it enough, and if it’s super fierce, and you know you look great in it, wear it to death (pun not intended).

Ok my fashion conscience says a maximum of once a month. Haha! Trends are so fleeting and as Heidi says, “In fashion, one moment you’re in, and the next you’re out.” So use that eyelet dress, those gladiators, and that nude-colored number til summer’s end, or well past the expiration date if your inner stylist can render it Fall-able.

Point 3: Wear it out while you still can.

The whole issue of age-appropriate dressing has been thrown my way a number of times. I always think, if you can pull it, off do it! At best people who don’t know you well will think you’re younger than you really are.

On a personal note, I’ve switched to a more conservative or modest stance with regards to my wardrobe in the last year or so. After going over old photos, (my BFF was a summer girl, always in neat little minis or shoulder baring tops) I figured I have the rest of my advanced years to cover up. It’s time to ressurrect my arsenal of figure flaunting dresses; a little too edgy pieces; and sky high-heeled wonders while I can still pull them off.

Point 4: If you love it, get it.

This is a tricky one. I’m not espousing uncontrolled consumerism. I am on the otherhand saying that if you’ve been dreaming of owning a YSL Muse, or Chanel ballet flats, or even having something made by a favorite local designer, find a way to make it happen. No sense living in la-la-land forever. Life is here and now.

In the same thread, treasure and enjoy what you have while you have it. Contrary to what the Pharaohs and Emperors of bygone eras believed, you can’t take it with you when you go.

Point 5: Dress up for the girls as much as you would for any guy.

It’s always more fun to impress the girls because they give the best (and the right) compliments. You know those oohs come from their well-versed fashion-y brains, which easily rewards all the effort you put into dressing up.

Enjoy the “shopping dates” and the girly lunches you all dress up for. Now that we’re older, my girl friends have taken to soiree-style seating arrangements when we get together, demoting the guys to a different table. It makes for prettier pictures. Teehee!

This is not the place to make any assumptions about the afterlife. All I can do is think of ways to enjoy the life I know is real, while I’m still living it.

Now, as I get dressed in the morning, I recall always asking her before a night out, “Do I look pretty?” And she’d answer me with a big silly smile, “So pretty!”

Will miss you always!

Havin’ a look in Beijing

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I’m no Scott Schuman but I do enjoy observing how the locals dress whenever I find myself in a different country.

Was in Beijing for the first time over the weekend. Granted I snapped these photos in tourist sites so these women were probably from other parts of China, or the world for that matter.

But with summer already here, and I’m sure you’re all cooking up some fab vacay, it’s good to reference what other women wear when they travel too.

First stop, the Temple of Heaven. Coat Check!

These two ladies put a smile on my face.

Between watching (and admittedly trying to copy) the morning exercises that crowds of middle aged people were doing all throughout the park (a choose-your-own-adventure mix of learning the tango; repeating synchronized pre-choreographed steps with a group; or ribbon dancing with colorful strips of fabric), and spotting crazy fur coats, I nearly missed the actual sites.

Note that I did see three other women wearing equally fuzzy, Elmo red jackets that day. Maybe it’s lucky?

Not so keen on her hair but i thought the lady on the left looked adorably prim with her fur jacket, velvet skirt, and neat little boots.

I’m always amazed by women who go sight-seeing in heels. She could just as easily be walking downtown in this outfit.

I kept stalking this lady, mainly because her coat seemed like a lot of fun (plaid + fur!). It was near impossible to get a good shot (maybe she knew, haha!). Click on the images to enlarge them and check out her studded boots with the little tassels at the back. Hot!

Moving on to the Forbidden City. Boot Camp!

Saw her from afar and I fell in love with her boots. They look like spats don’t they? The heel isn’t too high either. I so picture myself wearing them with brown lace tights.

I truly subscribe to the whole Shabby Chic and  Eclectic approach to styling and my eyes just zoned in on these two travellers the minute they stopped by me.

I especially liked the look on the left, probably because I can see myself wearing it, disheveled hair and all. Her fur jacket was perhaps inherited twice over or was a great thrift store find. Certain panels on the right sleeve were falling off at the seams in the most well-loved, naturally worn-out, Alexander Wang-ish way. Her Balenciaga Giant Day hobo and scuffed gold cowboy boots sealed it all in for me.

Navy boots! I’ve been so drawn to blue shoes as of late. Aren’t these divine? So cute with her shorts and puffy parka too!

I heart these lace-ups. They’re rugged but the color of the leather is so rich. I especially love how she paired them with plum colored tights and a shearling coat.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if the Philippines actually had a Fall/Winter season. Imagine all the fun we’d have playing with layers and tights and boots and sweaters and scarves and coats.

Sigh.
