This weekend I finally got to indulge in a secret obsession: tie dye. I have amassed quite the collection throughout the years–indeed, I came of age in the Benetton/Esprit era and have embraced the trend, albeit too enthusiastically, the first time it came around. As fate would have it, my old pieces have not seen the light of day since, well, Courtney Love became a widow; the few useables that remained, past their prime and, therefore, so loved and worn were they, saw the natural progression to house clothes.
Thankfully, we have fierce fashion bloggers like Rumi that show the rest of the world exactly how to incorporate the glamour back into these grungy pieces. I love how she finds the perfect balance between guy-hot and girl-hot into an ensemble, and no matter how “street” she looks, it’s never sloppy.
I found a tank/dress in Zara that best approximated the ’09 version of tie dye: super-soft, I-wanna-die-in-this cotton, and with a blue and white scheme and slightly ombré-d process, it was stylishly modern. Coupled with sleek basics and predatory heels, it zoomed past its granola, rasta appeal and went straight to comfy and fashion-forward… the combo of my dreams.
Oh, and in true beauty/fashion symbiosis, guess what’s coming up for M.A.C. this July?

M.A.C. Cosmetics Colour Craft is blowing up this July ’09, and it’s. gonna. be. big. How do I know? Because lately every gal and her uncle is a sucker for that painterly, neon, so-retro-it’s-new-again OTT thing (just check out Preview’s May cover girl Ruffa). Jackson Pollock would be so proud, non?
Obviously, the trick is in trying to use all the shades while preserving the original pattern in all its juiciness. Or maybe we can all buy doubles and have one each for play and display! Yay! Either way, this is me, completely giddy with excitement. Who knew double-dipping would see the light again? What’s next, My Little Pony hair mascara or a Kelly Taylor-inspired fragrance? (I can dream.).
