Shoe fetish

Can I tell you …about Fetish. I’m not talking about just any other fetish. I’m talking about Christian Louboutin and David Lynch’s latest collaboration. Legions of women have a fetish for Chrisitan’s red soled shoes and David’s films are …well, fetishistic to say the least. Remember Twin Peaks? Need I say more.
Upon arriving in Hong Kong, my friends and PR Divas Shirley Hiranand and Reyna Harilela invited me to come to the opening at Cat Street Gallery in Sheung Wan. How could I say no. Christian was in town just for the event and I wanted to meet him. DVF speaks so highly of him, they’re BFFs as you may already know.He was mobbed of course as his fans, me included, waited patiently in line to get him to sign the book, others brought shoes so he could sign on the famous red soles and some women wanted to share their shoe stories with him. He was very patient and accommodating despite the heat in that gallery.
People dashed out to the street as soon as he signed their books. It was claustrophobic in that tiny gallery. Everybody was outside, sipping champagne and sharing stilleto stories. All these women have several stories…some PG rated and some…well, you can use your imagination can’t you?

The photo exhibit showed 5 limited edition shoes as well as the huge prints by David Lynch. The images were mysterious, disturbing and surreal ( very David Lynch). The models were naked yet cloaked in shadows, showing off their alabaster skin in contrast to the shoes which were in black or red patent. I heard someone whisper that the models were dancers from the famous Crazy Horse Cabaret in Paris.

Hong Kong It girls Audrey Chiu, Tansy Tom, Valerie Chow and Kay Li all showed up. Fellow accessory designer Fiona Kotur showed up in a chic python coat and satchel. We both share a fetish for skin…snakeskin that is. Thai royalty Ann Thanavisuth and her debonair husband Pan Kanch flew in from Bangkok for the weekend. My favorite was the ‘Siamese Twins’ pump (2 shoes fused at the heel). Christian pushed his designs to torturous extremes. Spikes on the sole, metal cuffs, heels higher than the actual shoe, and a ballerina with mesh soles.
Collaborations between designers and artists are the norm these days but this pairing was far from typical and quite successful I thought. As bizarre as these descriptons sound these shoes were beautifully crafted objects of fetish fantasy. Mais, oui bien sur! These are Louboutin shoes after all.The girls and I dashed to have some Shanghainese food at end of the event. The night was young and so were we! After a fabulous dinner we hit our favorite clubs. But that’s another story.
