Feeling CHRISTMAS!

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

I wanted to feel the spirit of Christmas and what better way to do this than the smell of a real live pine Christmas tree in your house!  I wanted to surprise Nix with this as he really as in REALLY loves Christmas! I never had a real Christmas tree before and I thought why not this year!

I asked around how I can get one and I heard that S&R had some.  Now I do not own a membership to this store as were only two in the house and we do not buy in bulk.  Good thing my friend Malu is a member and called in a reservation. Yes!  People you have to reserve your live Christmas tree!

When I got to S&R I was very impressed! It felt like COSTCO!  Actually most of the items that we had bought in Costco were right there!  It makes you think why on earth did you even bother to send a balikbayan box home when all you needed to do was go to S&R! JEESH!

Christmas decor extravaganza!

Christmas decor extravaganza!

Apart from the mountains of PX goods( Bet you have not heard of that in a while LOL!) they had loads of Christmas gear, more than enough to start making you hum Christmas carols!  I held back and just  bought my tree, but the place really made me want to be a member!

I had a hard time choosing between these two!

Tee Nee’s Baby Shower/Brunch

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

HI!  It feels like ages since I have blogged!  I just had so much work that I had no time to sit and write.  Thank goodness for this long weekend I have the time to catch up on  what I have been up to.

A few days ago I joined a fantastic baby shower/brunch for my sweet friend Tee Nee Chan!  She is one of the most talented singer/actress in the land!  Anyhoo, she is having a baby and we decided to have a  brunch! Now brunch in the city is quite a tricky situation as no one really knows how to do it properly!

This feels like FAMILY!

This feels like FAMILY!

Love how my girls come coordinated. (They do not plan this but it comes out this way.) Brunch outfit= Light pastels, dusty pinks with touches of green.

Thank goodness for a handful (actually less than a handful, as in less than five, places know how to do a proper brunch menu) for MAMOU’S at Serendra.  They really know how to do brunch right!  They had lovely cocktails at hand, I loved the peach cocktail as its light and gave me a lovely buzz as I nibbled on wild boar on Melba toasts!  Absolute heaven in a bite, with a mix of pommerry mustard and blueberries, it’s really worth the treck to Mamou’s. ( Call now and if Tita Annie is there send her my hugs. 028563569)

The brunch we had for Tee Nee was so much fun, it felt like all the family was there and we had a fun time chatting and eating.  I had the Rau plate!  I loved how the thick whole wheat bread which was cooked like French toast but it had a surprise in the center: a lovely soft egg that just completed the whole bite. The dish also came with thick slices of bacon cooked in BUTTER!  (did you hear thunder?) I ordered a side of sausages which made me very happy!  I slowly savored this meal as It was so good! I had to have coffee and the Benguet brew was quite nice, it was tangy and strong with a nut like flavor to it.  We all shared some dessert, as an assortment of fall goodies, like pumpkin pie and red velvet!   YUM!

After the meal, Tee Nee brought out pictures of her baby inside of her!  I am so amazed a this kind of technology as you can really see the features of the baby!  Antonio Enrique Chan is GORGEOUS!  I cannot wait to see him in the flesh!  We all have to wait as Tee Nee is due in a month in the mean time, I have to focus on feeling the Christmas spirit!

YOGA Contest!

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

You may not know that I am a frustrated Yoga practitioner, been practicing now for under 3 years.  I started out with Bikram and now am doing Iyengar. Tessa is my Yoga idol!  Despite her super busy schedule she still finds time for her practice.

Recently she invited me to the first Philippine Yoga competion.  You might think that this is a paradox of sorts Yoga and Contests?  Apparently this kind of competition has been around for years, obviously starting in India and now all over the world!

I failed to bring a camera so these photos are from my friend Amanda Carpo.  I am aching to go back to Bikram and I promise to do it this week!  AACK!  Pray for me!  Tessa almost placed, what with her lovely yoga outfit beaded and all and her body tattoo she should have won, sadly she was giggling at the start of her postures, eh…no giggling allowed pala! LOL!  Enjoy the photos!

Not by the Book! By Tippi!

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

I felt really bad that I could not make it to the opening of Tippi Ocampo’s exhibit and book launch.  I finally found the time today to come and visit and when I got there, I felt  so happy and proud of her.

I met Tippi more than a decade ago when she asked me to do her wedding!  Even then she already has a style all her own. I remember her gown so vividly as she wanted something nostalgic and minimal, echoing the style of Jackie O.  I even remember her lovely small veil that was so delicate.  After her wedding she gave me a photo of her and Ito (her husband) being blessed by the POPE!  She got married in Italy.  I felt so good as that was the closest I have ever gotten to Pope John Paul II.  After her marriage she began her designing career and there was no turning back.

The exhibit showcased Tippi’s beautiful drawings and right beside them, the drawings came to life.  I have always loved Tippi’s recurring motifs like her hook and eye details and her crafty touches.  You can really feel the intelligent sense of humor in her work.

I remember this dress as it was her entry in the Young Designers Paris Competition. (I won't tell the year para walang age issue LOL!)

RIIR= Rags 2 Riches!

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Last Saturday I was witness to a super blessed event!  It was the one year anniversary  party of Rags2Riches.  More than a year ago I was invited to dinner by my good friend Ange Benavides, I did not know that this dinner would create a change in me and in many ways make a better person. In that dinner were a group of young men and women dedicated to change the lives of the people in Payatas.

Payatas is one of the poorest communities in Metro Manila, this is where you find the infamous smokey mountain. They asked me how I could improve the rags that they were making?  The minute I saw the
rags images of fashionable accessories flashed in my mind, I call it my light bulb or AHA moment ( I am  a true disciple of Oprah. LOL!) !  I started folding the bags and showing them my ideas.   I took the rags to my studio the next day and by evening I had the first prototypes.  I showed it to the board and then asked if I could meet with the people doing this so I can teach them.  They responded very well to the project and the rest as they say is history!

From 20 nanays when we started,we now have 300 nanays in the project !  The Rags2Riches project has won several international awards, you can read them all in our website rags2riches.com

To celebrate our one year anniversary, we invited famous artists to create limited edition bags that we auctioned!  We had National Artist BenCab do an original painting on the bag.  Anita Magsaysay-Ho
who is a very respected artist gave us permission to reproduce her paintings and had these plastered on our  bags as well.  My good friend Raymund Isaac showed his savvy and style by creating uber fashionable versions of the bags. Stylist to the stars Jenny Epperson together with her gorgeous daughter created a fun and chic collection that elicited many oohs and aahhs!  I also did 5 limited editions pieces that reflected my design aesthetic.

The BenCab bag!

The BenCab bag! This bag fetched a whopping P360,000.00!!!!

The evening was a huge success!  We would have not been able to achieve this without the help of the Intercontinental hotel who provided the Bahia and the super yummy food and wine!  We also had Bombay gin  as a sponsor (making everyone loosen there purse strings more LOL!). Cream silk was also there to  lend a huge hand.  A huge thanks to Saga, specifically Robbie Carmona he created the beautiful space and made sure that it was spectacular!  Finally to my angel Tessa!  She hosted the event and raised….well a lot of money…. a few thousand shy of  1 million pesos!

Brasserie Lolo-Dads in Makati!

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Two weeks ago something exciting happened in Makati!  One of my beloved restaurants came to town! Lolo-Dad’s has been my ultimate pleasure place for several years now have decided to create a version of their goodness for us Makati folk! The location could not be better, it has taken over the once infamous “Giraffe” bar at the 6750  building.

The restaurant is called Brasserie Lolo-Dad’s, meaning its a relaxed environment, invoking an overall French Bistro feel!  The Menu is easy to navigate and filled with wonderful treats.  I found one of the salads so intriguing.  It’s called the “Only for the rich” salad,  I decided to reserve this for another occasion and ordered the corn and seafood chowder – it was a generous portion with fresh sweet corn and large clumps of dungenese crab meat and two large scallops!  I loved the soup and alone makes a satisfying meal.

This salad caught my eye, will save this for my next visit!

A close up of the corn and sea food chowder! This warms your soul the minute your spoon touches your lips.

My next dish was braised oxtail with mashed potatoes.  You could really taste the love in this dish, it was as if they were braising this for 12 hours as the meat was so tasty and soft. I just nudged the meat and it fell  off the bone. The mash potatoes were dangerously good as you can just eat heaps of this without thought. The aroma of the truffles were  permeating with each forkful of the mash!  It was heaven in a plate!
This was clear example of what I love about Lolo-Dad’s. It was what I call “slow food!”

These pop-overs were sublime! Warm and just lovely!

Alas….it was not to be, all of the men were married and the game of the evening was to guess who these men were married to? CRACK! LOL!

Tessa’s Fab Find!

Friday, November 21st, 2008

I consider my dear friend Tessa Valdes as the ultimate shopper!  She just loves..no lives to shop!

One time when we were in the states I left her for one afternoon shopping, maybe a total of 3 hours and  when we met she was able to fill up three balikbayan boxes!

We met for a Thanksgiving dinner recently and I noticed her neckpiece!  I loved it!  She was very proud to tell me that the price was just under P1000!  That is incredible considering the work involved!  She bought it in Carolina’s lace shoppe! They have branches in Glorietta and in Megamall, I think they also have in Market market!

I love the colors and the beaded detail is very good considering the fantastic price!

What I love about the piece is its versatility, it can certainly bring some sparkle to any outfit!  It some how reminds me of the work of the beadwork of Azzaro.  I think its a fabulous find!  Good job Tessa!

The piece certainly adds some ZJUSH!!! To any outfits!

Starting Over

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Here we again starting all over for the summer season.  I begin each season with mood boards and draping studies.  At this point I am just playing trying to find a brand new shape or a new detail.  I love draping of a form as I get to see the way the shapes are created instantly.

I am liking the leather bow/knot of this dress. The reaction it creates is interesting.
