ART in the Park!

Monday, March 16th, 2009

I am a huge follower of what is happening around the Salcedo area in Makati.  They have such an energetic community that I frequent the area often.  Some of my favorite eating places are there, like Apt 1B and Terry’s Selection.

On any given Saturday, you will find me in their Saturday market to sample the wonderful array of delicious food (specially the stall of the 2 hot mommas!!!).  Or if I get there early enough, I buy some eucalyptus leaves (they always run out by noon).

Now there is another thing to look forward to in the Salcedo area.  It is called ART in the Park!  This wonderful project is brought to you by the Museum Foundation of the Philippines.  I think it a SUPERB project.  It’s a great way to know new artists without the regular protocol of galleries and agents, and often, the artists are there to talk to you about their work.

This ice sculpture was literally cool! LOL!

ALIVE!

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

I first met Mark Nicdao around 5 years ago. He was just starting out, but I realized immediately that I was in the presence of a star!  His energy was just boundless!  He was bouncing off walls,  spreading himself on the floor  just to get that perfect shot.  When I was invited to his recent show called ALIVE, I was really so happy for Mark because he really deserves all the accolades that are coming his way.  This man has great talent and I am so proud of him!  CONGRATULATIONS MARK!

The main man of night! I asked him how he felt now that all the cameras were pointed at him? All he gave me was this devilish grin! I love the concept of the show! He mounted his amazing 8 foot tall photos on the water feature in the fashion walk of greenbelt 5. I thought that it was a genius concept to have Viva sponsor the event as water was a major theme for the photos. I took some photos of the pictures for you all to see! Check it out!

Our Summer Collection 2009 is out!  It’s called MAGIC PRIMARIES!  I would like to personally invite all of you to come over our store and take a peek at what we have done.  I wanted to channel my inner child, something bright, cheerful, and optimistic.  The collection has a very naive quality to it, like it was designed by a 4 year old!  LOL!

Last Saturday, we had a private viewing and an intimate party to launch the collection.  We had quite a number of guests but my favorite were 3 cute little boys that really brightened my day. These boys were Elias, Roque and my godson Max!  They are the sons of my dear friend Pauline Suaco-Juan.  We just had a grand time playing and chatting!  I love how you can just give a child some paper and colored pencils and that’s it!  They are happy na!  That happy contentment is the soul of the new collection.

We decorated the ceiling with this simple installation of bond paper on fish wire. I really like the way it looks! Its something anyone can do at home!

Young Fellows Frick Gala

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

My New York Correspondent PJ Pascual is one busy, busy boy!  He just emailed me photos of the recently held FRICK Young Fellows Gala. I really enjoyed looking at the dresses and seeing how fabulous all these women were looking!  This is a really cool and prestigious event gathering the young socialites of New York.  In many ways, this is like the real life GOSSIP GIRLS, without the drama…hmmm…Maybe just a little bit of drama? LOL!

Our very own Monique Lhuillier co-chaired the event with Ivanka Trump.  There were so many beautiful women in lovely gowns.  Most notable for me was the gown of Lauren Remington Platt.  She was wearing Nina Ricci.  I loved how fresh she looked.

A Toast to Jason Wu!

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

My New York correspondent PJ Pascual is one cool cat!  He gets invited to the best parties!  The most recent one is the party given to one of Michelle Obama‘s fave designers, Jason Wu.  PJ says that it was one of the best events of the season.

Jason Wu (center) with PJ

There were so many fun people there, like Anne Slowey, the fashion director for Elle Magazine. She has this show called STYLISTA…..Confession time, I actually watched the entire first season in 2 days!  It was such an awful, awful show but I could not stop watching it! LOL!

Anne Slowey

Jason Wu was in a dapper grey suit which made him look like a cute Asian Mormon.  LOL!  His muse Olivia Chanecaille was there too, in a deep blue dress, as well as Bergdorf‘s main buyer Roopal Patel.  The CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year Philip Crangi was present too, as he did the accessories for Jason’s show this season.

Spelling Bee!

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I am probably the worst speller in the entire world!  It has always been a problem for me.  Each time I watch spelling bees,  I find myself in a state of panic.  My palms become clammy and I break into a cold sweat!  Imagine all this tension transformed into a musical!  LOL!   I saw this musical around 3 years ago and it was FANTASTIC!  I am so happy that the play now will be showing in Manila.

The play is brought to us by Atlantis Productions and directed by one of the most talented young men I know – Bobby Garcia!  I also have extra news:  I will be a guest in the show!  HORRORS!  I think my date is on April 3.  YIKES!  I am already shaking in my boots!  I encourage all of you to come and watch the musical.  It will be really worth it!

LET THE SPELLING BEGIN!

The competition is intense. The words are hilarious. Let the spelling begin! The Tony Award winning Musical THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE opens March 20th and runs until April 4th at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.

SPELLING BEE centers around a fictional spelling bee in Putnam County, New York. Six kids in the throes of puberty face off in the battle of their lives. They compete against each other as well as members of the audience. Three adults help adjudicate the proceedings: a nostalgic former spelling bee winner, a mildly insane Vice Principal and The Official Comfort Counselor completing his community service to the state of New York. SPELLING BEE has a Tony Award winning book by Rachel Sheinkin and Music and Lyrics by Tony Award winner William Finn.

No two SPELLING BEE shows will be alike, as SPELLING BEE will feature “starring roles” each night for two volunteer audience members and two surprise celebrity guest spellers.

Atlantis Productions gathers a stellar cast of theatre veterans Cathy Azanza-Dy, Pheona Baranda, Johann Dela Fuente, Rycharde Everley, Carla Guevarra-Laforteza, Noel Rayos, Felix Rivera, Thea Tadiar and Joel Trinidad, who have all worked with Atlantis in the past.

SPELLING BEE is directed by Bobby Garcia, Choreography by Chari Arespacochaga, Set Design by Tuxqs Rutaquio, Lighting Design by Johnsy Reyes, Costume Design by Twinkle Zamora, Vocal Coaching by ManMan Angsico and Musical Direction by Jojo Malferari.

For tickets call 892-7078 or 840-1187.

Valentina!

Friday, March 6th, 2009

My heading was not a typo error!  There is a buzz in NYC about this fashion designer called Valentina!  My dear friend PJ Pascual just emailed me some photos from her exhibition at the New York city museum.  Her whole name is Valentina Nicholaevna Sanina Schlee (Now that is a mouthful!  Kawawa naman siya in grade school no? I mean, you had to write your whole name! LOL!)  She is of Russian heritage and was a huge design sensation in the late ’20s and early ’30s.  She had a stellar clientele – the likes of Greta Garbo, Lyn Fontanne, Gloria Swanson and Katharine Hepburn.  These women were the superstars of that era!

Together with PJ is Mr. Mark Walsh, the Museum curator for the Valentina show!

Valentina’s style reminds me of Vionet with her bias cutting technique with the sultry lines of Madame Gres.  I wish I was there in the exhibit, but I got her book on Amazon and I am quite anxious to see it.  Thank you PJ for putting us all on the loop!

JIL = LOVE!

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

I think that Raf Simons is a GENIUS!   I adore what he is doing for Jil Sander!  Each season, he just comes up with the most INTELLIGENT designs.

This season, his clothes had this organic curvilinear aspect to it, almost like a super chic Judy Jetson!  I found out that he was inspired by Pol Chambost.  He is a French sculptor and a very famous ceramic artist.  I found these photos on a funny blog called Imelda.com.au Check it out!  The blogger pays an homage to our very own steel butterfly.

This season’s Jil Sander is something that I will remember.  The shoes are just INCREDIBLE!  I find myself looking at them over and over.  HAAAY!  This is why I LOOOOVE fashion!

When My Muse Got Married!

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Today, one of my dearest friends got married!  I do not remember exactly how we met, but when we did, I fell in love with her and decided that she would be my muse.  In fact, my 2001 gala was all about her. We did an extensive photo shoot together and we even made a beautiful short film.  Her name is Sarah Meier.

I am sure that your all familiar with this 6 foot tall stunner!  She is many things…model, tv host, rap connoisseur, wife – but above all, she is a mother.  Watch out for her daughter Kaya Isabel Albano, for in a few years, she will making everyone’s hearts flutter.  At the tender age of 3, she already makes me weak in the knees!

I wish Sarah and Benjo all the happiness and Joy in the world!  My very best wishes and congratulations!

Sarah is truly one of the most beautiful Filipinas ever! I am so happy that she asked me to be a part of her big day!

She had her reception in Hacienda Isabella. This hacienda is owned by the famous chanteuse Ms. Kuh Ledesma! The place is really beautiful, it reminds me of the French Provence but with a really strong Filipino twist. I had time to wander about and I thought the place really exuded a lot of STYLE! Sarah and I wanted her dress to be really light and airy! I thought that the best manner to do this is in Swiss Silk Illussion tulle. I dyed the dress in several shades of Lavender and Dove grey to achieve this smokey effect. I then added hand made silk flowers in the back cascading into a virtual explosion of tulle.
