HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZ UY!

I remember the first time I met Liz Uy. It was at a fashion event back in the early 2000 which feels like so many eons ago?! LOL! We did not know each other then but I am the type of person who immediately notices a person with a certain “presence”. Liz had this confident bearing that was intriguing but not over bearing. Even then, her style set her apart from the rest. Remember, this was the early 2000 where minimalism was being embraced. Then here was Liz with her love for luxe, shine and texture! I FELL IN LOVE!

Fast forward to 2012….Liz Uy is a certified STYLE STAR! Her every move, decision and fashion choices are observed by the hundreds of thousands! Her influence in fashion can no longer be denied as every single super being in the land worth any merit passes through her unnerving and meticulous eyes. Be it the biggest mega wattage super pop star or the hottest “it” girl up to the President of the Philippines! This is a major achievement!

In spite of all of these accolades, she has remained one of the most down to earth women I know! In fact, under all that elan and painful chicness is really a “barok” kind of a girl! It’s that balance that really makes me adore and love her to bits! It does not help that I find her really beautiful – something that I constantly remind her of. You see, Liz thinks otherwise and I think this demeanor candidly paraphrases this amazing young lady!

A few days ago, she celebrated a special birthday! (Debut nya ata?! LOL!) on top of the Metropolis called “SKYE“( Read…Very chic and very cool!) Around her were people she held close to her heart. It felt so wonderful to be surrounded by all of Liz’s friends and I then realized how special we all were! There on top of the world celebrating life truly being lived!

PROM FOR THE BOYS!

One of my followers on twitter requested that I do an entry on what should boys wear for the Prom this season. So I immediately asked my team to come up with a few mood boards to just give all of you a couple of ideas on how to look like in the prom.

Our first suggestion is to to think “out of the box”! Why does it always have to be a black suit? There is nothing wrong with that per se, but remember that 95% of the boys will be in a black suit! If you’re the type of man who wants to make a real statement, then I suggest you take inspiration from our Russe collection. I took inspiration from Russian royalty and made it contemporary. Think rich brocades in Ink and Russet or even brave tapestry. I think this will really be a fabulous suggestion for the Prom.

However, if black is your thing, then let’s take inspiration on how the Japanese do it! For me, the Japanese do black so well. You can also give it a bit of an edge by adding some leather to the equation. This gives it a real tough edge. Think Tuxedo with a wicked twist. The La Poire dinner!

I am of a bit of a bind these days as I am trying to shed more pounds, lose weight and generally get healthy. However on the opposite side of the spectrum, I am a huge food fan and a dinner invitation is almost a sin for me to decline. LOL!

I also love my drink. Meaning, I enjoy spirits, wine and a bit of liquor depending on the provenance and if it’s really a good single malt! However, my drink of choice is a toss up between a Gin Tonic or a Vodka tonic. I have a couple of favorite brands and one of them is Grey Goose. They were kind enough to invite me and Nix to a really fun and intimate dinner at The Goose Station.

We started with adult versions of ice cream cones. LOL!

A mini caviar pie! I was careful not to eat the pebbles. Tee hee!

This super thin potato chip is always a joy to snack on. See how transparent that is? That requires loads of mad skills.

Passed up on this eggs benny cocktail! The calories would kill my trainer and nutritionist in one go. LOL!

I did indulge on this beautiful salad with pears.

I really loved that dinner as it was a mix of people that I see often but I really don’t get the chance to talk to as “events” nowadays really do not lend itself for proper conversations. Now the art of conversing is really something that I enjoy and sadly, this skill is slowly experiencing a slow death.

Dessert came in the form of a pear panna cotta.

So between the “fabulous” cocktails (they really named a cocktail called fabulous, which was really really good!) using the newest grey goose called La Poire (The Pear). We, the guests, all had a really good time.

It also helped that The Goose Station is one of the most exciting places to dine in the city. The menu was inspired by the Grey Goose La Poire which was delicately perfumed and had the most exquisite flavor that I am certain will be a huge hit!

I LOVE ILOILO!

My mom hails from Dumaguete. I have an affinity for The Visayas islands as I truly feel at home there. However, apart from Dumaguete, my other love has got to be Iloilo! I really love this province! I think it is the combination of the beautiful friends I have made there or the fact that it has really great food! LOL! Each time I come here, I am filled with so much joy!

So it comes as no surprise that each time I am invited I literally drop everything and just go! I recently had a show in time for the Dinagyang festival with my palangga Eric de los Santos who is carving out a great name for himself in the fashion scene and let me tell all of you how immensely proud I am of this! I met Eric a good 10 0r 12 years ago in Iloilo and I knew in my heart that he would be doing very well. Eric has got to be one of the nicest and sweetest people in the planet and he really deserves all the blessings that he is experiencing! BRAVO to you my friend.

Together with the SAGA events crew (including the main man Direk Robby Carmona) and 10 of the top models in the country, we all flew to Iloilo and presented a rocking show! I was so happy with the show and I was really happy about the turn out.

When I am in Iloilo, I call on my dear friend Pauline Banusing-Gorriceta who I fondly call the Governor! LOL! She is the hostess with truly the most! As am left not wanting for anything when I am in town. I usually make a pit stop to “Break Through” which is an area with arguably the best seafood fare in the entire Philippines! I was so lucky that the now rare diwal was in season! If you don’t know what diwal is, then you’re missing half your life! LOL! It is the angel of all shell fish! The shape alone reminds me of those Victoria secret wings and the flavor and the texture of this amazing creature is a cross between an oyster, abalone and a scallop! It is just pure heaven on a plate! I prefer it lightly steamed and dipped in this vinegar blend indigenous to Negros called Sinamak. Sinamak is a local vinegar that has been infused lengthily in garlic, chilies, ginger and a whole plethora of spices that just makes eating sea food so much more of a religious experience. Pauline also ordered my favorite grilled blue marlin which is just more tasty when eaten near the beach!

It was really breathtaking and truly inspiring. The details were just mind boggling. I am certain when you see the photos you will be amazed. However, to be completely hones,t my photos do not do this home justice. Promise me that when you get to go to Iloilo, you will visit this place. It is a beautiful reminder of how our forefathers lived and it’s a connection to who we are as people. Each time I look at the photos, I begin to dream.

The show was happily well received and we all partied like mad men in DINAGYANG fashion! It was really another trip to remember! To all my palangas in Iloilo! Baw…..Kasadya guid! Kananamit sang mga pagkaon dira dasun katahum sa mga personalidad sa mga tawo! Nasadyahad guid ako sang over na over! LOL! I LOVE YOU ALL!!!

Manila Mandarin Dragon Extravaganza!

I am still on a Chinese New Year high! LOL! For the last 4 or 5 years, Tessa Valdes has given us a tradition of celebrating the Chinese New Year at the Mandarin Oriental Manila. My friends, Tessa and Tim Yap, annually host the event and Nix and I have been fortunate enough to be the chosen guests.

Our evening's host Tim in RUSSE by RAJOMAN! and Tessa Valdes as an empress dowager!

Each year is different and I think with each year, it gets more dramatic and more exciting! Since this is the year of the Dragon, the whole theme was practically drawn out from that image. There were more Dragons in Mandarin than any hotel in the metropolis. I do have to admit that the Mandarin is truly the best place to welcome the Lunar New year as they have so many fun activities that last the whole night all the way to the wee hours of the morning.

You have to be prepared when you celebrate the Chinese New Year celebration as this can last till 4 am and dinner is usually served after midnight. So this year, I came from a nap and a massage so I was prepared to duke it out till the sunrise. LOL!

We were close to the stage so we got great views but I am sure those in the back saw nothing.

ACCP 2012 Art Auction!

One of my personal advocacies is the ARTS! I have always believed that ART is the soul of our people. Without it, I feel we would be all empty vapid shells. I sit on the board of The Asian Cultural Council whose main objective is to enhance the artists by giving them the opportunity to enrich their skills and crafts by immersing themselves in further studies or internships.

The Philippine board’s main goal is to find the money to do all of this. A really daunting task if you ask my opinion. However, it can be done. This can be done by all of you passing this message to everyone you know and sharing this information.

Today, we will be having main fund raising project which is an auction celebrating the greatness of the Filipino artist. This year is very special because we asked the help of the country’s top galleries to take part and share with us the most coveted and provoking talent they have in their roster. I for one, am very very excited for the auction and I implore all of you to help me spread the word on your Facebook accounts, on your twitter and on all your email data base. The more we spread the word about the auction the better it is for the future of our artists. Help me rekindle our soul and make our artists alive!

DISTRICT DINING

When my friend Kerwin Go (who is the chef of the super yummy People’s Palace) found out that I was flying to Sydney so he was adamant that I had to eat at District Dining! I believe Kerwin as he is no bull-shitter when it comes to good eats and so on my final meal in Sydney, my friends got us a table and it was a really simply beautiful experience.

What I love about this restaurant is that it was real authentic, real, simple, straight forward and just sensational! http://districtdining.com.au/ The menu was easy to navigate and the plates seemed to be meant for sharing which I always prefer. We began our meal with a lovely pitcher of Pims! I have fallen in love with this super refreshing drink that I swear I will be serving this at home when I entertain. This is an easy recipe http://recipewise.co.uk/pimms-cocktail-recipe. TRY IT! It’s really really really GOOD!

We then had a trio of the appetizers. Deep fried quail eggs which opened up our taste buds. I specially loved the creamy dip. Then we had some sweet chicken wings which was a bit sweet for my taste, wish it was 2 notches less sugary. The baby shrimps were gorgeous as it had an Asian spin to the meal.

We then had a beautiful salad made from sweet golden and red beets and micro greens and the most beautiful feta cheese. This came with a side order of greens that just made me smile! I will really miss the vegetables in Australia! I truly wish that we had better vegetable options in Manila as most of what’s available is quite depressing!

We ordered three more dishes which were just splendid. The baby lamb was just too beautiful that it almost made me weep! I mean it was just perfect! Then we had some pate’ that was both earthy and heavenly that I was left just oohing and aaahing!!! Finally, we had some beef tartare that was so top notch that I was holding myself to order another round! LOL!

Finally, my friend Mark had to have his dessert so we all happily obliged. So we opted for a bar of chocolate for dessert and a really delightful bar that was like part cheesecake and part ice cream that was just entirely divine! I just have to say that this truly was the perfect way to send me back off to Manila! Recharged, revitalized and inspired! Thank you Australia for an amazing holiday! I have to say this was really one of the best vacations ever and I cannot wait to be back! Thank you to all the friends that I made both old and new. I am deeply and profoundly grateful! MARAMING SALAMAT!!! I cannot wait for all of you to come and visit us and show you how beautiful my Philippines is!

The Fat Kid Inside’s BBQ birthday bash!

However, Erwan takes this passion to the next level! The man is really obsessed with food and we had many conversations about it and to be honest, it is absolutely wonderful!

Birthday Boy hard at work! He basically cooked almost all the food from scratch! I was amazed!

We have been planning a meal with him for so long but our schedules never made it possible. So when Erwan invited Nix and I over for his birthday BBQ, I took this as a chance to finally taste all the yummy food that he has been showing in his blog.

The menu!

It was a lazy Sunday afternoon in a beautiful garden with a 1950′s home that has been lovingly preserved by the Heusaffs. I love the fact that they preserved the heritage of their home and not just tear it up like other people. It is so rare now to find a beautiful mid-century Philippine architecture that I kept looking at their house for several minutes.

The garden was also unusual as it was cut lengthwise and had these amazing trees. Any home with large trees for me is a home run! It reminds me of my grandparents’ home in Malate. Erwan set up his party in his very chill, laid back manner! He had us pick our fillings and he made these amazing sandwiches that just tasted AMAZING! I zeroed in on the soft shell crabs that were deep friend to perfection and placed in between these beautifully baked bread! I gave up carbs for 2012 but I had to indulge! LOL! Good thing I took a cirq-fit class before coming to the party.

I zeroed in on the deep fried soft shell crab! It was sweet, salty and crunchy and just fabulous!

I also had to try the pulled pork that was cooked in Erwan’s special brick oven for what I heard was eternity. LOL! Let me tell you, that pork made me cuss because it was so good! It was moist yet crunchy and tasty. Finally I had to try his salads. All of which were equally fresh and complex.

Erwan also set up this bar with a bevy of original drinks from Berry Mojito’s that made me sing inside. I must have had 4 cups of those! Nix on the other had loved the watermelon concoction. I tried it as well and it was really delicious.

While we were having our food, Erwan arranged for some really funky music courtesy of a trio of very young men called The Hansoms. I found them really cool and quirky at the same time! I could not help myself laugh with their OPM interpretations. I would not mind having them over at my parties one day.

The best thing about that party was the company. Just a mix of really chill albeit really beautiful people! Erwan is the beau of Ms. Anne Curtis who is probably the most popular star in the Philippine showbiz galaxy. However, behind the kleig lights and the stage, Anne is one of the sweetest and normal persons that you could ever meet and know.

Last Saturday was a magical day for Ms. Anne Curtis! Basically her dream came true! It’s not everyday that you get to witness a dream coming true to the magnitude that is Anne Curtis. I was really privileged to have been part of that dream as both her stylists called on me to create 2 looks for what I think is ”The most fashionable concert in Philippine History”. I am no stranger to the local concert scene as I have been lucky enough to dress up a lot of artists in the country.

This was one of the gowns that I did for Anne! It's our homage to modern royalty! Normally, it takes me around 3 months to make this but I cannot believe that we did this in 3 days! Granted I had my staff work round the clock to get to the finish line! The dress was so large that it occupied a small room in Araneta! LOL!

The costumes filled the entire backstage! This feathered number is from Dennis Celestial.

This beautiful bodysuit was created by the genius that is Michael Cinco!

To be able to fill up a venue like the Araneta is no easy feat and to be honest, quite daunting and frightening at the same time. Even before 8pm 3/4 of the Araneta was already full! That is AMAZING! I also had a chat with the producer of VIVA productions and he told me that it was a 95% sell through. That means that 95% of those watching paid to see the concert! WOW! No wonder it was so hard to get a ticket! I mean it truly was! I had to call on several friends to help me get a seat! LOL!

I feel a bit bad that I am so delayed in posting this entry! Blame it on the fact that I have a gazillion things on my plate. I am not complaining, I am very fortunate to be busy but I wish I had more time to blog and more time to share with you all the fun and crazy things that I have been doing.

So now back to the entry!

Tim Yap is one of my dearest and closest friends! He is one of those people that really makes things happen and his boundless energy, not to mention his extreme positivity are both intoxicating and delicious. When Tim throws a party, it becomes a real event. He is able to get that perfect mix of people that makes the party really memorable.

For his birthday this year, he threw a Madhatter’s ball! I thought it was an excellent idea and made the entire denizens of the metropolis go hat crazy. I for one, immediately knew that I wanted to wear an Indian Chief headpiece. I have always loved the pageantry of it all! I remembered my friend Rhett Eala having one so I called on him to borrow his authentic Indian chief headpiece.

From the get go, I knew I wanted to wear this! Thank you Rhett, for lending this to me! It was a hit!

Nix on the other hand had several options for him. Our friend CJ Cruz is in town from London and he had this amazing vintage boater hat from Maison Schreman. The same people who make hats for the House of Chanel! I also asked Jun- Jun Ablaza who does these incredible accessories to loan me a few of his out of this world Coq feather headpieces as an option.

Nix on the other hand ended up wearing this boater courtesy of CJ Cruz.

This was Nix's second option from Jun- Jun Ablaza.

Nix was a 1940's British school boy from Eton! LOL!

Good thing I came prepared as some of my friends ran to my studio for support! Georgina Wilson is a constant fixture in our studio! Gela, my sister, is her favorite makeup artist so she is practically there every other day! I even tease her that she is already a Laurel! LOL! I had to make her wear the biggest head piece I had in my loot! It was this amazing thing that was almost 4 feet tall. It was incredible on George as it even made her taller. Belle Daza and Solenn Heusaff were also in my studio so I suggested that Solenn wear the other coq hat that would look incredible on her! I suggested that Belle wear her mother’s Ms. Universe crown! LOL! I thought that would be so amazing! I mean every one wants her to be a beauty queen so I thought this would be the perfect time sans the pressure. LOL!

The party was a huge success and everyone had a really fun time! My favorite DJ Mars Miranda was there to make sure that everyone was on their toes and Mariott hotel made sure that our glasses were never empty. I just want to wish my friend Tim Yap a happy birthday and may all your goals, wishes and aspirations be a hop,skip and a jump away! I for one will always be behind you and beside you with all your triumphs and pains. Happy Birthday TIM!
