THREAD ART!

Friday, October 14th, 2011
I LOVE ART!   Art is something that makes me happy.  What makes me even happier is when I meet new artists and really get inspired by their work.  I recently discovered this very talented young artist by the name of Eugenia Alcaide.    I first met her and her amazing thread art work during the ALABAMA art fair.  I asked her to create something for me and in a few weeks she came to my office and delivered the work.
.

So happy when my commissioned pieces arrived.

I first only wanted two but Eugenia got inspired and created 3 pieces.

This is the very talented Eugenia Alcaide.

.
I loved it!  It’s haunting and a bit disturbing and very beautiful.  I only have blank white  walls in my office as I normally prefer to work in blank spaces so my mind can think.  However, because of the beauty of Eugenia’s work, I decided to break this and add them to my wall.  It’s only been a few days and I still can’t stop staring at my ladies (that’s what I call them).  It’s as if they are watching my every move. LOL!  Take a look at my new thread art and be amazed!
.

I found a perfect spot for it in my workspace.

I cant stop staring at them!

It has this 3-D effect that I am so in love with.

I want a John Santos!

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

I am putting this entry here as a shout out to the universe!  LOL!  The very first time I saw a John Santos was almost 3 years ago.  I don’t remember exactly where I saw it but what I remember was the feeling.  I was in AWE!  I was fascinated by his technique and the hyper realism mixed with a deep meaning and understanding of the Filipino psyche.

.

.

After his amazing presence at the HK International Art Fair, I think it will be even more difficult to get my hands on his painting.  I did hear that there is already a waiting list past the hundreds and a friend who is on the list will have his painting by 2014!  LOL!  Oh well!  I am prepared to wait because I know one day I too will have a John Santos.  In the mean time, check out a few of his amazing paintings that I saw on line.

The Tretyakov Museum!

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

If you have been following my blog you would know by now that I love museums!  If I could live in one, I would!  To be surrounded by beautiful art every day would be my idea of Utopia.  One of the best museums in Moscow is the Tretyakov museums. www.tretyakovgallery.ru They have the finest Russian art collections in the world.  A lot of the Russian artists are not known all over the world primarily because most the artworks were kept within the country. Only a handful of Russian artists’ work were able to travel.  Names like Kadinsky we know of because we have seen and heard them.

However there is a whole gamut of amazing artists that I have yet to discover.  The museum’s founder is Pavel Tretyakov.  He is a very rich merchant and industrialist that collected art, but his main intention was to share it to the world and he was quoted in saying that “these pictures must belong to the people”.  I for one was completely mesmerized.

What created an impression to me were the artists Mikhail Vrubel whose brush technique and style left tingles in my spine.  There was this enigmatic symbolism in his work that I could not remove from my mind. I also fell in love with the painting of Philip Malyavin called the Whirlwind.  I think this will be the start of my Holiday collection based on these two artists. At the moment, my mind is so full!  I cannot wait to see how this will be transformed into a collection!

I can imagine why YSL's greatest collection ever was his Russian Collection! It is really so inspiring! I love how your eyes just go to different directions and then you realize that it's several women's dresses in movement and the way they dance create the patterns in the painting.

According to the the founder of this museums he only collected art that would be part of Russian Culture.

An Evening with Ernest!

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

I recently had the opportunity to have dinner with Mr. Ernest Escaler. He is one of my personal idols and I was more than happy to comply to his invitation. The dinner was in honor of our friends Artus Concepcion and his partner Jonathan Richter. They are spending the holidays in the Philippines.

Ernest is our Chairman of the Asian Cultural Council. I sit on the board and he has really influenced my thoughts on philanthropy and art appreciation. He prepared a sumptuous meal composed of ingredients that he grew himself! How many of us can say that? After the meal, he toured us around his beautiful home filled with the most incredible art. I really enjoyed the evening, as it was one of those super intimate dinners. Hope you’re all doing well!

We started the evening by enjoying the cool breeze of the Philippine december air. I wish it was the weather was always this agreeable.

The ACCP Party!

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

My goodness!  It’s like I am on a party overdrive!  LOL!  I certainly love the holidays, it seems you never run out of parties to go too!

My most recent one was an Asian Cultural Council Christmas cocktail party hosted by Patrick Reyno.  It is always such a joy to visit Patrick’s pad, as it is like going to  a museum!  LOL!  No wall is left bare!  Every available surface is decked with the most modern voices in the South East Asian art scene.  Patrick is one serious collector!  I am just happy to be invited!  Just being there ignites my creative juices.  The party was short and sweet as we all had other affairs that evening!  No rest for the wicked!

LOL!

Ballet-Barbie-Bulli!

Friday, December 4th, 2009

I just had one of the most incredible dinner experiences last night!  I was invited to an intimate dinner last night by Ms. Margie Moran Floirendo, otherwise known as Ms. Universe!  LOL!  I was very much intrigued as the invitation  read “Ballet, Barbie, Bulli”. I mean…I HAD TO GO!  Right!?

It had all my favorite things in this world!  I love the ballet!  I love as in I LOVE BARBIE!!! LOL!  I think I am a fashion designer now because of the doll.  As a young boy, I would steal my sisters’ Barbies and give them makeovers!  I even saved my allowance just so that I could buy Christy! The first black barbie!

I also love Bulli;  El  Bulli is the super famous restaurant of Fernand Adria, the world  famous chef who champions molecular gastronomy!  His restaurant is located in Bilbao, Spain.  Having a meal there is a once in a lifetime experience!  Well…..When you get an invitation from Ms. Universe, you just have to go!  LOL!

These were the invitations! I just had to go! I could not help myself!

A BENCAB for Christmas?

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

I love the work of national artist Ben Cabrera! In fact, when I graduated from High School and my parents asked me what I wanted for a graduation present, I asked for his work. Thankfully, my Mom was a friend of his and I got my gift.  Since then, I have been slowly collecting his work and I am now the proud owner of 6 BENCAB’s.

One of my most memorable experience with Bencab was when we collaborated on a series of paintings in 2003. I was inspired by his Sabel series and created a collection based on his work. Serendipitously, an opportunity came for him to draw models using my clothes. I brought out my SABEL collection and the model we chose was Isabel Roces. So it was Sabel times Three! The paintings were sold in an auction but I did not have the means to acquire them then.  I wish one day to own one of those collaborations. Ben was kind enough though to give me one of the studies and he even dedicated it to me!

Christmas came a bit early this year because a BENCAB just fell on my lap recently and my Mom and I decided that we should get it. I liked the composition. It’s a bit dark and brooding but I love looking at it and the painting, as it makes me go through several emotions. Christmas came early for me this year! SOOOO HAPPY!!!!

I wish I knew what the painting is called?

I am almost sure that it is from his traveler series.

PS1

Monday, November 9th, 2009

I have always wanted to visit the PS1 Museum.  I have been hearing only wonderful things about the place and now that I had to opportunity to be in Queens, I was finally able to do so. It’s a branch of the Museum of Modern Art and the whole museum was once a public school building, hence PS1.  As you enter the museum, you are greeted by a gigantic courtyard with an installation piece that changes every season.  This season, it was a like an enormous hair-like pavilion that would not feel out of place in a Star Trek movie!  LOL!  It was creepy and odd and absolutely perfect for the Halloween season. LOL!
