My Newest Find!

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

I always get so excited when I meet young artisans. It’s like I want to share their talents to the world! From my recent trip to Bangkok, I discovered this brilliant accessories designer. They are actually a design team and they are….I need to take a deep breath… SIRIKARN JIRAJBHASKORNKUL & SUPOT SWUNNASING! Whew! LOL! Their line is called SAPRANG. This season’s collection is very romantic, but it has a real edge to it. The collection reminds me of fairy jewelry.

I brought a couple of limited pieces home to share with all of you! Please come visit the House of Laurel (Please call 028955688 loc. 808 and look for Cara or Lay for more information.) You must  try them on! You will be pleasantly surprised to find out how really affordable the line is. My favorite piece is the petal cocktail ring, I love the way it moves as you gesture!

My To Do List in Bangkok!

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Whenever I am in Bangkok, I have several must do’s on my list. I am quite lucky enough to visit the City of Smiles quite often that I have already an inner itinerary in my head. You have to forgive me, as I did not have enough photos to properly document all my adventures as I was with my team.  When I am with them, I end up being like a “Dad” to all of them as I try to make sure that all of them are fine and that they are well-fed and provided for.  So here are my must do’s:

1. EAT! Hello! This for me is the most important thing to do in Bangkok! I have a few favorite restaurants that I visit and here are my top 2!

a. Home Kitchen – This started out as a hole in the wall but now occupies 3 large lots along Langsuan. I love the “karinderia” feel about the place, but I swear to all of you: they have the best fried catfish salad that you can see being prepared in front of you. I love the steamed sea bass here as well, as the fish is alive minutes before they steam it. The oyster omelette is to die for as well. The best part is that it’s so affordable – think 300 baht a head for a meal that you will remember forever!

I could not take photos of the food so well as everyone was so hungry, but the fried catfish salad is just fabulous!

b. Celadon – This restaurant is located at the super chic Sukho-Thai Hotel. It’s a bit more chi-chi than the  Home Kitchen, but it’s really so worth it! The ambiance alone is worth the price of admission. I always order the cotton fish fried to perfection with a mango-cashew nut sauce that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The roasted red duck curry here is also so very very good!

I also love this famous crab place called Somboom? Not so sure of the name now but the food there is so yummy!

for an extra 100 bhat you can get the crab curry de-shelled! It makes eating crab less messy, but I think its more fun to eat crab with the shell!

2.  GET A MASSAGE- Nix and I are massage junkies! We get one almost twice a week! However, in Bangkok we end up getting one a day! LOL! We either end up getting a foot massage or a full Thai massage. We normally go to this place called Massage Number 5, located  at Lansuan Street as it’s so very near the Fraiser place that we normally stay in. Let me tell you, it’s the best 250 baht ever spent! Do not get turned off by the facade or the interiors, just close your eyes and feel all your worries melt away. However, if you do want  the full-on Thai Massage experience, then head on over to the Mandarin Oriental Spa. I have done it before and it’s the closest thing to heaven. I swear! Book ahead online though, as it gets full easily.

3. SHOP - OK! I shop everywhere, but shopping in Bangkok is extra fun as everything is still pretty much affordable. I love going to Suan- lum night market as it’s always so fun to haggle.  My biggest tip is the Thais love it when you’re extra sweet, so the style there is to haggle with “lambing”. The local Thai designers are AMAZING! The store to go to is called 10, located at the Paragon Mall, where you will find all the young and super talented designers!

That is my to do list!  Short and sweet, but I end up doing this all when I am in Thailand, regardless if I stay a week or just a couple of days! What is your must do list in BKK? Do share!

The Art of Living

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

I stumbled upon a brilliant furniture show in Bangkok called “The Art of Living!”  It was stunning!  Gone are the days of ornate Teak furniture, it is now replaced with sleek and sharp forms but still retaining the natural beauty of the wood.  I was in style heaven because everything was really so chic! I did mention that I am an interior junkie?  I actually get inspired by spaces and this triggers my creativity.  I wanted to buy a lot of things but decided to stop myself as I have no where to put it!  LOL!

A series of chairs that really caught my attention: I love the interesting shapes that they had plus the fact that you can really see the beauty of the wood.

This was my favorite!

What was great about this show is that it featured all Thai designers and that you can actually buy the pieces and have them ship it out to you! The pieces were all so well priced an average of like 6 to 8,000 pesos per chair.  Not bad considering the quality and the design!  I left the show inspired  and I hope that in some way this inspires you too!

The Secret Garden!

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

I relish finding new places that inspire me. Recently, my friends and I discovered this beautiful place in Bangkok called AGALICO, it’s only open on weekends from 10am to 6pm and they only serve tea, coffee and cake. It is located along Sukhumvit soi 51 inside the Bunjirathorn building.  There is really nothing remarkable from the outside but when you enter the place, it’s like you are transported to the time of Jane Austen and the like. It is owned by a famous interior designer in Thailand and he had this place all to himself.  He was kind enough to share it with the public and have it enjoyed by everyone.   There is a sense of serenity and civility about the place that you end up talking in hushed tones and suddenly you become more delicate! LOL!

The interiors remind me of old English homes, or at least how I would imagine them.

What I love about the Agalico is the secret garden outside as it’s really lush, lovely and really relaxing. My friends and I converged in the gazebo and we had a fantastic time!  I think those of us who played tea time as children would really enjoy Agalico as it brought back many childhood memories for me!  You must  pay it a visit!

Blythe!

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

I have been noticing these dolls called Blythe all over over Bangkok and I am on the fence if I love them or if I am terrified of them!  One thing is for sure: they are really popular and they have a huge following, they even have free-standing stores dedicated to them. What I like about the doll is that she really has an extensive wardrobe and the clothes and the hairstyles are so varied!  I wonder if Blythe is available in Manila?

See you soon!
