The Young Entrepreneur Awards!

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Last week, I had the privilege to be a judge and the keynote speaker (NAKS!) at the HSBC Young Entrepreneur Awards!  This was such a special project for me, as I think of myself as half a businessman and half a designer. It is so important for me to make young people realize the value of business and that it’s not all pomp and pageantry.  I was asked by HSBC to judge the contest late last year, and it was a great experience.  There were almost a hundred applicants form various schools and universities in the Philippines and it was narrowed down to five for the grand finals!

The board of Judges were so impressive that I found myself  a bit insecure being part of the panel.  They were all pillars of the business industry, like Jaime Zobel, Lance Gokongwei, Alfred Xerez-Burgos and the like. (Proudly, I held my own, though. LOL! )

The board of judges was stellar! I mean 10 major individuals in the business industry! HANEP talaga!

I was so nervous when they asked me to be the key note speaker, all I could think of was....I am not worthy! LOL!

The prizes were staggering!  That alone should inspire many others to join next year. A bit of trivia for you: 4 of the 5 finalists were from the Ateneo and the other one was from La Salle. However, most of the judges came from La Salle!  LOL!

Check out the prizes! I mean, that's a whole lot of money!

It was really a fantastic experience for me, as I was really nervous giving my speech. But I guess I did well, as they gave me a standing ovation after, and all the judges stood up, patted me on the back, and shook my hand. A proud moment in my life!

Here are some images and photos from the competition.  For all you students reading this, I suggest  you all join next year because it’s really a major opportunity!

This group was called the Atlantis group, they won 3rd place! The business that they propose was using the janitor (pest) fish and changing this to fish meal to use a feed for hogs.( they won 125,000.00 pesos and a study trip to Hong Kong!)

I liked this group a lot! They are the Chains for change group, the business idea is to transform old clothes into fashionable hand bags! I love how my advocacy RAGS TO RICHES inspired them! They won the 2nd prize!!! ( 200,000.00 pesos and a study trip to Hong Kong! MAJOR DIBA!)

The gold goes to the group called BELEAVERS! The business idea was creating semi disposable plates from fallen coconut leaves! I loved the energy of their presentation and the banter between the two presenters were really in-sync. I also like the BARONG tagalog outfit as the rest of the groups were in suits these young men stood out for me because they wore the national shirt! Plus they really had a SOLID business idea! For this they win a whopping 300,000.00 pesos!!!! Plus the honor to represent the country in the international Young Entrepreneur Awards to be held in Hong Kong! Congratulations guys! I know that you will do very very well in the International finals!

Woe in Wuhan!

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

I arrive in Wuhan, China at around 2 in the afternoon and my first impression is how can a place be so gray?! Everything seems to be covered in a gray haze!  I am here to design the uniforms for the Mariott hotel chain.  I usually fly in and do an ocular and from there draw up some inspiration and create a presentation/ pitch for the new designs.  I am in a a bit of a bind because I find the place so sad and has an general feeling of malaise.

I have never been to place where everything seems to be grey!

Even the sky is grey!

The dusty trees give this place a sullen feel.

Wuhan is surrounded by water - this is a bad photo of the giant river that I can't be bothered to find out the name as it's not so pretty.

My view from my room!

The view from the room of Bernice! I can't decide which is more depressing: my view or hers?

I must rise to the occasion and shall take it upon myself to put some life to this dreary place, God! Help me! I have been traveling since 4 am and now it’s close to midnight and I feel like I am beaten to a pulp.  If I do not get some rest I will look like this place!  LOL!

So excited for the trunk show of Style Bible…I know that my  team is working on presenting something special as I am certain it will be spectacular!  Looking forward to that!

See you  soon!

I Heart the HK Airport!

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

I am on a quick business trip to China and I had a three hour layover.  Normally this would annoy me to death but not when the layover is at the Hong Kong airport.  It is my favorite airport in the world!

I love the architecture of this airport, it reminds me of a quilted sky!

Love the fact that you can really do some serious Duty Free shopping!  They have lots of luxury brands represented like Hermes, Prada, Gucci and Cartier.  They also have some luxury brands that normally are not represented in Duty Free.  They have an extensive Lanvin for Men store that made me just drool!  (The blue loafers from last season were 50% off!  It took all my strength to walk away from them.)  They also have this brand that I adore called Ports.  I love that line as it’s so intelligently designed.

I also love the architecture of the airport and the fact that it is so easy to navigate. A major bonus of this airport is the MUJI to go store! Located just after Departure Gate 61, the store is a slice of heaven for those wary of airport shopping.  They have so many wonderful products for sale that I was worried that I might miss my flight!  I always stock up on their tiny travel vessels and I adore their stationaries and pens!  This time I stocked up on some snacks as I was traveling to Wuhan, China!  I was not so sure if the carrier called China Southern would have food I liked on board. So I bought some almonds and my fave snack called OSEMBE! (rice crackers wrapped  in seaweed! SARAP!)

So happy that Muji to Go was on route to my gate!
