The Chris Brown & Rihanna concert!

Monday, November 17th, 2008

We were so excited for the Chris Brown and Rihanna concert yesterday!  It was as if we were just preparing for it the whole day.  I have to be honest that I was not so familiar with most of their songs, so we looked for their CD’s and did a crash course on their music.

We decided to go early as we heard from friends that the traffic was getting scary.  Everything went on smoothly and went  to our designated standing room only area.  A couple of my friends had seats (Bleacher seats) but I found this far from the stage so we decided to just stand nearer to the stage.

At around 8:10 it started, a man came descending from the top of the stage inverted, like some urban Batman.  He then started to be joined by hooded dancers and did a really cool number, I thought that
it was just an opening act but NO! It was Chris Brown himself!

Opening number: Chris Brown descending like an urban Batman!

He performed for over an hour and I loved his portion! You could really feel that he was giving his all!  I loved two portions of his part: the homage to Michael Jackson and the song “With You”!  He was really so GALENG!  I lost my voice just screaming!

Love this part where he payed homage to the great Michael Jackson!

After his part they transformed the stage for Rihanna.  It took quite some time and good thing the producers came out with some fireworks display to entertain the 70,000-strong audience!  Personally , I came to see Rihanna as I am more familiar with her songs.  She came out looking great!  A look that combined S&M bondage with a bit of Alma Moreno (Tangga and all) LOL!

    Loving her S&M bondage outfit!

Remember the Tangga? Well, it maybe making a comeback! LOL!

Her first song was Disturbia!  It was a great song to open but somehow I felt she was not giving it her all! The Filipino audience is one of the most responsive audiences in the world (I think that is one of the reasons a lot of the foreign artists come to perform here). We are sensitive to the point that if the artist is not in top form we can feel it. I felt that Rihanna was tired.  She looked fantastic but she her voice was not in the best shape.

I love it when she takes it slow, her voice comes out better.

The finale! Umbrella song with a Rastafarian vibe to it! Think reggae version.

I still enjoyed her part of the show but I felt that Chris Brown did a better performance.  Here are some blurry photos from that evening!  See you!

    Sarah is the ONE!

    Friday, November 14th, 2008

The day I got back to Manila was the big concert of Preview October cover girl Sarah Geronimo.  I was commissioned to do the opening number of the show and ran to the Araneta Coliseum to check her out. I was amazed at how composed this young lady was amidst the flurry of a dozen pair of hands polishing and fluffing and just making sure she was perfect!  It really takes an army to make a star and wow her dressing room was packed!

I was so tired from my trip that I did not have the energy to take more photos.  However the coliseum was full to the rafters!

Her eyes give a hint of anxiety...I would be too, performing in front of 10,000 people!

    Chic to the Nth Power!

    Saturday, November 8th, 2008

What I love about New York is that I get to meet the most chic people and get the chance to eat and drink at places that I only read about.  My childhood friend JR Abad took me out to meet his friends at this super cool restaurant called Double Crown.

JR at Double Crown. Don't you just love the mouldings!

I love the interiors as it looks European with Asian elements.  The concept here is British-India, a blend of the English with some South Indian touches.

We had a great meal and lovely stories.  I got the chance to meet JR’s friend Rita who was absolutely stunning!  She is Chamoro (Guamanian) Filipino!  She had a great look to her with a fluff of hair and severe eyeglasses! I loved her drop crotch pants and her coat was gorgeous!  Her boy friend Michael is German and is the right hand of Ralph Lauren (NAKS!).  Both looked like a fashion editorial!

After dinner, we headed off to the Gramercy hotel.  I have stayed here before and the hotel was designed by the Renaissance man Julian Schnabel.  The man is like the Superman of American art, not only has he done visual art, his films are also critically acclaimed.  I love his movie “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.”  Everyone has to see this, given the chance.

In the Gramercy hotel is the Rose Bar, a favorite hangout of celebrities like the Olsen twins et al.  That
night there were so many “artistas” and the like, I was too tamad to take photos na at that point. (read..Lasing! LOL!)

    Halloween in New York!

    Saturday, November 1st, 2008

You know that things are going to be a bit wild and crazy when Halloween falls on a Friday night in NYC!  Nix and I decided to come as our favorite designers! LOL!  Me as Alber Elbaz and Nix as Karl Lagerfeld!

The evening started out with a lovely surprise, Bette Midler was having a benefit in the hotel and we peeked at the ballroom and lo and behold, the party was in full swing with Gloria Estefan on stage!

That is Gloria Estefan in goth! I love it!

It was fantastic, we were perched on one of the upper balconies of the ball room and we could see so many lovely people in full costume!  Celebrity spotting was the name of the game as we saw PINK and Elton John!

We had to go to our own party in the East Village and we all decided to get a LIMO!  I mean if were Karl and Alber would they not be in a limo? LOL!

Tessa as Tessa! LOL! I joked that this is the only day she takes a day off from her fantastic costumes...perhaps because she is in Halloween mode all year!
