The Cory Aquino Bag!

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

I just wanted to share with you my latest project with Rags2Riches. In cooperation with the Eastwood Mall, I designed a shopping bag in tribute to the late president Mrs. Cory Aquino. This is the second time that I have done this for them, and since the first project was so very well received, I obliged to do the Cory Aquino edition.

I thought the project was so perfect because I consider Mrs. Aquino as a symbol of motherhood for the Philippines, and the project involves the mothers of the poorest areas in the country. When I arrived at Eastwood Mall, the bags were already sold out! There is now a waiting list for the bags and it will be available next week! The bag is 600 Pesos and all the proceeds will be shared by the Rags2Riches and the Ninoy Aquino Foundation.  Please support my project and let’s reinforce the cycle of goodness!

Mrs. Cory Aquino’s Wake

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

I was really very sad when Mrs. Cory Aquino passed away. I have only beautiful memories of her. I had the opportunity to make several clothes for her and she was always such a beautiful person. I wanted to visit her wake and express my deep condolences. I was quite apprehensive at first because the radio and the TV were showing extremely long lines. Good thing my dear friend Malu Gamboa informed me that she was going with her sister and Mom and I asked if I could come with them.

We met at my apartment and took one car. When we arrived at La Salle Greenhills, we were instructed to take a specific entrance. We were all quite anxious because we all did not know if we would be allowed to come in. At this point, we were all taking trays of sandwiches for the family of Mrs. Aquino. Everyone must love these sandwiches from Milky Way, as these magically made us go straight to the private holding area of the family. We were then able to fall in line inside the gym and prayed the rosary. The whole time, I was amazed at how peaceful and organized the whole wake was. I heard that there were 2000 visitors per hour. We all really loved Tita Cory. Together with the whole country, we will pray for her eternal peace.

Here we all are carrying our sandwich trays from Milky way. This gave us a quicker access to the wake. NIx, Popsie, Tita Julie Gamboa and Malu.

At first it was light, but after several minutes, it felt really heavy.

We witnessed the changing of the guards at one point. Mrs. Aquino died on the first saturday of the month at 3am. I was told that true devotees of Mama Mary who die at that specific time go straight to heaven. I really believe that this is true.

The La Salle Green hills gym had very strong air-conditioning and I heard that it was on 24 hours.

The lines went on and on. No one seemed to mind, everyone wanted to pay their respects. Mrs. Aquino looked really radiant in her Canary yellow designed by my friend Paul Cabral it was embellished with silver beaded circles. Her make up was done by Juan Sarte and she really looked good.

I have not been to the Green hills gym for over 15 years and looking around I saw this historic Namfrel election board from Feb 16,1986. I had goose bumps just looking at it.
