A Grown-up Prom!

Monday, November 30th, 2009

I recently was invited to a beautiful ball and I wanted the share with all of you how lovely everybody looked.  I really look forward to this annual event because everyone really dresses up and literally have a ball.  In many ways, it’s like a grown up PROM. LOL!

Prom has always been special to me, because this is how I really started as a designer.  My classmates would come to me and ask me to design their dresses and I would tear the sheets out of my notebooks and draw their gowns.  This spirit is what I cherish and try to capture up to this day.  The ball was held at the super chic Makati Shangri-la hotel!  I had a really great time that evening. What is not to love?  There were so many beautiful people dressed so elegantly and the bubbles just kept on coming!  LOL!  Enjoy the photos!

The minute I arrived for cocktails, I spotted the ILONGGO contingent in full force! I consider them my family in the south! BIG HUGS all around!

The SLIM Gala part 2

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

During the cocktails, I approached my friend Vicky Veloso-Barrera, one of the head researchers for the SLIM retrospective, and asked if I could go ahead and view the collection for my blog! I wanted to take really good shots of the collection.  I really wanted to share this with everyone as I feel that the SLIM legacy has to be experienced by  all.  What she gave us all is a tangible face of who we are as Filipinos.

This entry is quite long, so please bear with me. Vicky filled me with so much juicy details that I hope I can remember it all.  The exhibit is defined not chronologically but through the various elements that SLIM used when she was designing.  Elements like Shape, Line, Surface, Influence and Brides, all of which were an integral part of her artistry.

I tried to capture as much images and information as I can but the best thing really is to visit the show itself.  The show will last till March and I intend to bring my entire team and staff to the show early next year.  This is one show NO ONE should miss out on!  To everyone involved in creating this masterpiece of a legacy, I say THANK YOU!  This is really how it should be done!  I could feel the true effort in creating something of this magnitude!

CONGRATULATIONS!  What an amazing feat!  ENJOY the photos!

The exhibit showcased more than 100 items of clothing and artifacts that showcases what Philippine Haute Couture looked like from 1947 to 1990. The exhibit showcased more than 100 items of clothing and artifacts that showcases what Philippine Haute Couture looked like from 1947 to 1990.

The SLIM Gala!

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

A few months ago, I did an entry on an extraordinary woman called SLIMS. Her real name in Salvacion Lim-Higgins. I stumbled upon her work while I was asked to sit on the panel for the National Artist awards. I saw just a glimpse of her work and I was fixated. Little did I know that there was a grand retrospective in the works to show everyone the SLIM legacy.

I was invited to come to the gala held at the National Museum. The minute I drove up, I was left speechless! There was a red carpet leading up to the majestic columns! I felt I was like this was the closest thing to the Metropolitan Gala in New York! When I entered the museum, the entire room’s energy was on high gear! There were so many beautiful people. This was natural, of course, as the evening was being hosted by two of the most glamourous publications in the land:  Preview and Town & Country! Everyone who loved fashion was there!

I decided to create this entry in 2 parts, one focusing on the party and the other on the exhibit. The retrospective will last till March! I encourage everyone to come and visit the SLIM show at the National Museum. Trust me when I say that your heart will SOAR!

MABUHAY SI SLIM!!!!

I excitedly whipped out my camera as I drove up the entrance!

Dennis Lustico!

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

This weekend was quite fun! The highlight of it all was the Gala Fashion Show of my friend Dennis Lustico!  The Gala was supposed to be held on Oct 1, but due to Ondoy, the organizers decided to move the date. I think it was a blessing altogether, as the venue was moved to the Makati Shangri-la Hotel. The night was filled with only positive energy as everyone wanted to raise money for the Red Cross. I am a staunch supporter of the Red Cross and anything that will benefit this wonderful organization, I am there. The evening also raised money for the victims of Ondoy.  Enough chit-chat, here are some photos from that night!  OH….I had to break this post into 2 parts as I took so many photos!  LOL!

The 50th Manila FAME!

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

I was invited again this year to be one of the judges of the prestigious KATHA awards! This award is given to exporters showing at the Manila Fame.  This year is the 50th Manila FAME exposition. Ever since I can remember, I would always look forward to this event, as it showcases the best of the best designers and exporters of the Philippines. This year was extra special for me as one of my dearest friends, Patrice Ramos- Diaz, served as one of the creative consultants! I am so very proud of her! Joining Patrice is another creative wizard, Eric Paras of the famous Gallery A-11.

I spent the whole day looking around the show and wondered if I would make the 12 noon cut off time! It felt like I was speed judging as I was zipping in and out of booths like I was in a trance! I take the responsibility of judging quite seriously, so I wanted to see absolutely everything! This post is all about my personal highlights ! If you’re interested in visiting the FAME show, it is open till the 18th of OCT! If you have time and the inclination, do go as this will open your eyes to the creative talents of our fellow Filipinos! It’s times like this that really make me so proud to be a Filipino!

I have always been attracted to the works of the MCCA group! Last year they won the best booth and this year the products lent itself to a more organic and earthy tome. I particularly loved these parsely/poppy shaped relief mirrored frame.

Rock & Fashion for a Cause!

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Rock and Roll plus Fashion is always a good mix! After getting well from the flu and feeling so much better (Thank GOD!), I decided to pop in at the HOY HOY ONDOY event! It was spearheaded by Tim Yap, Jay Ortega (who incidentally is the director for Project Runway Philippines season 2) and Saga Productions!

The event was a combination of many things! First, it was fundraising and awareness campaign to continue to help the victims of the flood.  Second, it was a ROCK CONCERT! There were so many rock bands that donated their time and talent for FREE so that the organizers could raise some major MULAH! All the proceeds of the event would be going to the RED CROSS! Finally, there was a fashion angle. Fashion people also came in full force as top Philippine designers joined in to donate their creations and had a silent auction.

The crowd was a wonderful motley crew of a rockers, fashion folk, young business men and many more.  I loved looking at the crowd and generally got a high from seeing that all these people really wanted to help out! By 11 pm, they had collected close to 250 thousand pesos from donations! How wonderful is that?  I slipped out soon after that as I did not want a relapse of my flu! However, as I was leaving the event, all I could fee was JUBILATION!

The rock scene! I loved the chill vibe of the crowd enjoying the cool music!

Once in a blue moon there are fashion moments that stir up my emotions and just make me say I LOVE FASHION! I just finished salivating over the details of the latest Alexander McQueen Spring-Summer 2010 presentation and I was like blown away! I mean, how does he do it? It’s all so INSANELY BEAUTIFUL!!! The details are mind-boggling! Everything seems so new and fresh! I have been an Alexander McQueen fan since the very start. The man is a GENIUS! I mean it’s pure art!  PURE ART!

VALENTINO!

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

When I received my invitation from ZEE magazine for the VALENTINO movie, I literally shook with delight! I mean, VALENTINO is a fashion god! I LOVE VALENTINO! I have all his books. I even have a very special limited edition book that he signed!

Valentino is a legend!
Valentino is a legend!

I heard about this movie several months ago and I even saw a preview of it on the Internet. I even ordered the movie from Amazon, but it will be arriving in late September. So you can imagine my happiness when I got the invite! I arrived at around 6:30 pm and the energy of the crowd was so strong! The crowd was really a power house of the Philippine fashion landscape. We were all there!

The crowd was a power cast of the fashion elite of the country like National Artist for fashion Pitoy Moreno ( I love the fact that Tito Pitoy is everywhere from the Lady Gaga concert to the Valentino premiere, I would not be surprised if I end up seeing him at establishment with a cocktail in hand! LOL!) and the President GMA's fave fashion designer Ito Curata.

The Shangri-La hotel staff was busy giving out PINK champagne and at 7pm on the dot, the movie started. From start to finish, I was mesmerized! The movie really gave all of us an intimate perspective of the life of Valentino.  The movie follows the life of Valentino for almost 2 years, leading up to his FABULOUS 45th anniversary party! Trust me when I say that there will never ever be a party like the Anniversary party of Valentino!

I had to steal some shots from the movie! Sorry if this is illegal I just want to share! LOL!

For me, it was also a story about love! The complex relationship Valentino and his partner Giometti.  Even if I felt like going to the bathroom to pee, I held it! LOL! As I really did not want to miss a thing! I did not want the movie to end! I left the movie so inspired with a high! This is the reason why I love fashion. I do hope that all of you fashion lovers get to see it because there will never be a fashion movie quite like Valentino …The Last Emperor.

I just wanted to share with you some photos of one of my favorite gal pals: Ms. Divine Lee, who is currently rocking it in Europe! I was over the moon with delight when she sent Nix some photos and I realized that she was wearing a lot of my clothes all throughout her trip.  I love the fact that Divine is living proof that my clothes are really travel friendly. Thank you my darling, and see you very soon!

Jujiin in Japan!

Monday, May 18th, 2009

I was so excited to meet up with Jujiin Samonte.  He is one of the most talented individuals I know.  We worked together in my last gala, where he shot most of the visuals that accompanied my collections.  You all should check out Jujiin’s blog called The Boy who Cried Chos – just type Jujiin.com. It is filled with images of his visits to Japan, which he does annually, and fun anecdotes of his experiences here.

Nix and Jujiin also went to grade school together, so they have been good friends since they were like 7! LOL!  We decided to meet up in Harajuku.  We were there ahead, and when Jujiin arrived, he was a showstopper!!!  Even the jaded Japanese style folk were turning their heads on this young man’s style vibe!

I spotted Jujiin walking towards us wearing his brand new Margiela shades! EYELAHVET!

He was also wearing this very limited Vuitton-Sprouse high tops. I heard that they only had 10 pairs being sold in Japan.

We decided to work the Omotesando and Aoyama area.  These two places are where some of the most upscale fashion establishments are located.  I cannot begin to tell you all how merchandising here is like a science!  It is really breathtaking!  We had a really amazing day where we just kept on laughing and taking everything in.  If you want to be inspired, come to Tokyo!  You really end up creatively shaken!

Loving the cool street style vibe in Tokyo. I could just actually sit in a corner stand and shoot the most beautifully dressed people in the planet!

Fashion and real estate have always been partners. Here in Tokyo its brought to a whole new level, where fabulous architectural buildings are created to house the brands.
