INSPIRATIONAL!

Friday, July 10th, 2009

I recently was invited to a dinner in the most beautiful house that I have ever seen in Manila!  From the moment I entered, I was like in AWE!  I loved the entire house!  I loved the use of wood, the open layout and the small details that make this house a winner on all levels!  I have been planning my own beach house for more than 2 years now and I will begin building next year.  This house is my inspiration!  I am in LOVE with this house!   If this house were a person, I would marry it in a heartbeat!  Take a look!

This is the foyer, which is both warm and inviting, I love the fact that it faces the raised pool which creates a waterfall ambience.

OH EM GEE!!!!  Riccardo Tisci is officially the king of Paris Couture!  He just recently showed his newest collection and it’s AMAZING!  I do not have enough adjectives to express my fashion high!  It’s moments like this that really make me fall in love with fashion!

The collection had like an Arabian/Moroccan Middle Eastern vibe to it, but it was so fresh and a bit scary.  I love that about Mr. Tisci’s work: he scares me in a good way!  Check out the some of the photos that I lifted from the Jak & Jil blog.

Long Live Lacroix!

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

The latest COUTURE season is on and I have learned that Christian Lacroix is literally hanging by a thread!  His business has gone bankrupt and in the hopes of finding new backers, he showed this season.  Through my research on the web, I also learned that he was able to show this season through the kindness of those who love Lacroix and who love fashion.  Only the models were paid!  They were paid 50 Euros each, as this was the French government legislation. Otherwise, everyone pitched in and did the entire show for free, from the fabrics, to the shoes, to the stylists, everyone did it for the LOVE!  I think this was a beautiful gesture.

I for one, as  a disciple of fashion, pray that Lacroix continues to create and make clothes as he is a true GENIUS!  Inserted  below are photos from his recent collection. He was very subtle this season, but you can see his great talent!  I wish that someone helps him out, because the world needs designers like Lacroix. He gives us the opportunity to DREAM!

Tokyo Shopping!

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Tokyo is one of my favorite cities to shop!  The Japanese are just insatiable shoppers and they have gotten down merchandising to a science!  It really takes great strength not to buy anything!  LOL!   The best thing about this trip is that I am traveling with one of my muses, Leica Carpo.  I love the fact that she can try on the dress and give me instant feedback.  Like….  “Rajo! It’s beautiful, but it’s impossible to get inside the dress.” I can only see things visually, so often it’s important that I have a woman tell me how it feels!  That’s important.

The fashion vibe in Tokyo is so strong that often I catch myself just staring at what people are wearing, trying to figure out the proportions and the way they put things together.  My usual jaunts are the Omotesando, Aoyama, Harajuku and Shibuya area.  These are great places to shop and to people watch.  Here are some photos of my latest expedition.

I try not to write about sad, negative things on my blog. But I had to express my grief for the death of Michael Jackson. I love his songs! When he came to Manila a few years ago, I saved up to buy the most expensive ticket that I could afford. Even if I was like super far away from the stage I had the best time. I took a photo of these toys. To remember him buy. Are they not cute and creepy at the same time?

At the Ballet!

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

I just want to share with you the theme of our upcoming collection for the House of Laurel!  The collection is called “At the Ballet.” The inspiration came from how ballerinas move and the way these women look off-duty.  We wanted to evoke a very textural approach to the collection, so we will be doing a lot of layered looks.  The fresh twist to the story was that we wanted a harder feel to the embellishments.  We will be using metal beads and a lot of hard ware.  This is the very first time that we will be using a muted palette inspired by makeup colors.

We are currently in the midst of finishing the collection, and we are all so excited for everyone to see our hard work. The collection will have its debut on June 6.  As I type, we’re now renovating the store so that it will look like a ballet studio.  We cannot wait!  In the meantime, do check out our mood board and a sample of the collection.

I am so inspired by "Third eye" YOYA GUECO! I think she is one of Manilas most chic dressers. Here she is trying on some of the pieces that inspired the collection. Dance pants and a loose vest. Its the ease and relaxed way of putting things together that I am trying to capture.

Kyoto Highlights!

Monday, May 25th, 2009
Spending time alone, I become more aware of my surroundings, and when traveling, the camera becomes my best friend! Kyoto is such a photogenic city that I ended up with the most amazing shots!  I just love my camera because it’s an idiot proof point-and-shoot camera, but in fairness, I love how my pictures turned out. Traveling is one of the few real luxuries that I indulge in, as it inspires me.  As an artist, I need that stimuli in order to be productive.  I am now recharged and reinvigorated.  Let me share with you my Kyoto highlights.
This photo was taken near Pont-cho. The area is beside a really pretty stream that is so clear and clean that you can see fish swimming along it.

KYOTO!

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

I want to share with you how I spent my birthday.  Originally Nix and I were to suppose to take the train to Kyoto, then head to Nara and Kobe.  The thing is, Nix had to fly back home earlier than expected for an important family engagement.  I was really sad at first at the thought of spending my birthday alone.  However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I should just go take this opportunity to enjoy myself in solitude. I have always enjoyed the my own company! LOL!  I have not been able to really travel alone for a really long time, so I took this opportunity to just enjoy my trip.

Kyoto is really an easy place to navigate, and if you like quiet shrines and the most beautiful zen gardens, then this is the city for you.  I, for one, wanted to go back and check out the geisha place called Gion, where the geisha is trained and you see them all over the place.  I even saw a show with geisha performing!  It was quite a spectacle.  I had a really amazing time on my birthday.  I was able to pray and really meditate on the blessings that God has given me.  I was also had the time just to be still, quiet and listen to my thoughts.  I recommend everyone to do this at least once in your life – to spend your birthday alone.  It’s really a special experience. I was not sad for one minute because I know that I am loved and that I have enough love inside me to go around the world 20 times and still have some left for 10 more!  Until then….I pray and thank God for everything!

I took the Shinkansen express train to Kyoto! This is the most efficient train system in the whole world! Its accuracy is like 30 seconds! GRABE! Oh..When I left Tokyo, the N1H1flu reached the Kansai area which includes Kyoto. I was scared at first but hey I am in Japan! The Met Costume Institute Gala!

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

There are two major events that I really look forward to in my personal fashion calendar. One is the Academy Awards or the Oscars, and the  other one is the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala, or The Met Ball.  I look forward to these two events because I love seeing the beautiful dresses on display.  Apart from the visual stimulation, I also study the trends on the red carpet because these dresses have a major influence on what the market  will be looking for in terms of color, cut and overall style.  One of my dreams is to one day attend the Met Ball, who knows?  Maybe next year?!  LOL!  FYI: the Met Ball is on May 4, which in Manila is actually today!

This year’s theme is Designers and their Muses.  The chair persons for this year’s Gala are Marc Jacobs, Kate Moss and Justin Timberlake. Sounds like a really fun group.  I spent a couple of hours over the internet trying to find images to show you, and I am happy to announce that I am able to show all of you a tiny peek at The Met Ball.

There was a bit of drama over this year’s gala, as a lot of people decided not to attend.  Some say that it was the financial crisis.  Other important non-attendees were a couple of the supermodels, like Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista. I hear it’s because Azedine Alaia was snubbed at the exhibition.  As they say, the show must go on and as a spectator, I am just happy to look at the photos and enjoy the beautiful and the not-so-beautiful dresses  on display!  Enjoy!

I was able to get these set up photos from Glamchic.com I love the drama of that draped mannequin on top of the fountain. The floral trees are also too chic! I wonder who designed the party?

Kate is werquin this Marchesa gown or is it the gown werquin Kate? Hmmmm... This has this Ursula the sea witch kind of vibe for me. I think she is pretty but the dress is OTT! LOL! (Red Carpet shots from Fabsugar.com)

Susan Boyle!

Over dinner last night, my friends and I were talking about this fantastic video that they saw on YouTube.  This was from the show Britain’s Got Talent.  I watched it immediately when we came home and I was in tears!  I loved it!  This reminded me of the saying that we should really never judge a book by its cover.  This can be quite challenging in my chosen field where often we take everything at face value.  This is the main reason why  I wanted to share it with all of you because it really touched me. It makes me think that dreams can come true.  Enjoy the video!  I know that you will all be moved by this amazing performance.
