Carratala!

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I received a wonderful surprise today.  My friend Ria Limjap brought some sweet jewelry created by the very talented Helena Carratala.  For those fashion babies out there, Helena Carratala (her name then was Helena Guerero) was the famous fashion visionnaire in the late ’70s and ’80s!  I remember my Mom wearing her line called AZABACHE and it was FIERCE!

The jewelry line is from her own label called Mangenguey, which is also the name of her beautiful island in Palawan.  I have not yet had the chance to see the island but I made a promise to myself that I will see her island soon!

In the meantime, I am very proud to show you her jewelry, which I will be selling in my store!  Come and have a look at her lovely pieces!

The Gem Palace!

Friday, February 6th, 2009

When I announced on Facebook that I was going to be in Jaipur, I received several messages from people that I have to visit The Gem Palace!  Peolple like jewelry designer Candy Dizon, luxury aficionado Ingrid Go, and international accessories designer Rafe Totengco.  I HAD TO GO!  LOL.

The store is located on one of the major streets of Jaipur called “M I” road. The facade is nothing to write home about, but when I stepped in….I was like WOW! The place was established in 1854.  Lining the printed walls were photos and letters from its illustrious past and present.  I felt like I was in a sacred place,,,, I mean these people did the jewelry of the DUCHESS OF WINDSOR!!!!  OMG!!!

That is just the tip of the ice cream sundae, so to speak!  I was thinking of taking them to Manila and sharing it with all of you! What do you think?

The facade of the place is so unassuming and quite simple.

They were so many beautiful ear rings that it hurt my feelings to choose one? I wanted to find something for My Mom!

The interiors were very European, very English really. However, the closer you get you realize that it's Indian, like the cotton blocked printed walls.

Curio cabinets filled with the most beautiful adornments. This was the antique silver section.

I took several photos of items that I think I will be selling in my store! I was drooling over these lucite cuffs! There remind me of the Verdura cuffs. I LOVE IT! Should I bring it to Manila? HELP!

Another cuff with diamonds and pearls!

I just can't get enough!

LOVE THIS TOO!

These "Darna" cuffs are also very cute!

The owner also has a really impressive Vintage car collection in the back! Lining his walls were several trophies from vintage car shows and rallies.

I counted more that 7 cars in his garage! They are really beautiful!

J’ADORE

Every now and then I have one of those “fashion moments.” These moments do not come so often, but when they do happen, it’s like manna from heaven.  I am happy to let you know that I just had a fashion moment today.

A week ago, we received a call from a young lady wanting to show us her jewelry.  I am always open to see and look at young designers work and I encourage them to show their work as often as possible.  This gives them more information as to how to improve their craft and provide viable feedback.  We set up a meeting this morning and she brought in samples!  Me and my entire design team were so impressed with her work!

Her name is Joyce Makitalo, 27 years old, and I think she is someone to watch! (She won the top prize in the Guild of Philippine jewelry design competition last year.)  I kept on trying to keep a poker face when she was having her meeting with my team, but I am not good at poker and I am so transparent!  I was so excited that she chose my store to sell her gorgeous jewelry.  Her style  is raw, chunky and just glamorous!  She uses a lot of rough semi-precious stones and brass and double-dipped gold casings.  I AM IN LOVE with her stuff!

The good news is that they are so well-priced! (Pieces begin at around 6,000 pesos) Her items are already in the store!!!  Please call 8955688 local 808 and look for Lay  or Matet.  Everything is just one of a kind ,so come fast. I have a feeling they will get sold out fast.  Her full collection for the House of Laurel will debut on the first week of March!!!  In the meantime, drool over these babies and come over and see it for yourselves!  They are FABULOUS!

See you soon!

Tessa’s Fab Find!

Friday, November 21st, 2008

I consider my dear friend Tessa Valdes as the ultimate shopper!  She just loves..no lives to shop!

One time when we were in the states I left her for one afternoon shopping, maybe a total of 3 hours and  when we met she was able to fill up three balikbayan boxes!

We met for a Thanksgiving dinner recently and I noticed her neckpiece!  I loved it!  She was very proud to tell me that the price was just under P1000!  That is incredible considering the work involved!  She bought it in Carolina’s lace shoppe! They have branches in Glorietta and in Megamall, I think they also have in Market market!

I love the colors and the beaded detail is very good considering the fantastic price!

What I love about the piece is its versatility, it can certainly bring some sparkle to any outfit!  It some how reminds me of the work of the beadwork of Azzaro.  I think its a fabulous find!  Good job Tessa!

The piece certainly adds some ZJUSH!!! To any outfits!
