Assumption’s VELADA 2011!

Friday, October 21st, 2011

I think in my past life, I was an ASSUMPTIONISTA!  My mom and my Lola will kill me for saying this, as they both went to different schools.  But in my heart, I can feel that I really was from the Assumption.     LOL!   My closest and dearest friends all come from the Assumption.  They have this thing called a VELADA. It’s like the most anticipated form of class reunion.  The girls put on a show and gather together to perform and show a whole lot of school spirit.  They also raise money to fund the various projects and outreach programs.

.

We were right on time to see the rehearsals.

Started out with an AVP of memories.

Then some cheering! The Assumption girls were always a tough act to beat at GALS! Does anyone remember those?

The Assumption spirit!

.
Well this year was the Velada of my dearest friend Malu Gamboa.  If you have been a reader of my blog, you know that we’re very good friends.  Malu Gamboa was the leader of their batch. In fact, she was the class president from Freshman to her Senior year!  AMAZING!
.

My darling Malu and Nix minutes before it was her turn.

.
She once more lead her batch to one of the most successful VELADA’s in history.  Malu and I have been talking about their Velada for more than a year.  The whole process is really special as it builds a sense of true sisterhood for their batch.
.

It was an homage to 80's music! Starting out with the song German Girl. I love that song.

Then more dancing!

I see Kitty!

GO MALU!

They all look so happy!

Malu was having a ball!

This was the Diamond ladies! Class of 1951! AMAZING!

Then the Emerald ladies came on!

I loved their latin number!

I spotted the mothers of my friends Tita Diday Barretto and Tita Marixi Prieto.

They were all so graceful!

I was so happy to see them perform!

I love the smiles!

Tita Diday was a star!

Then another class did a Stomp routine!

Making lots of noise and having tons of fun!

Then the batch from 1971 did a great song number.

After that, Malu's batch did an animal jazz routine.

WIth fun and funky animal costumes!

Lia Lesaca is now known as LIA-NESE! LOL! Hear her ROWR!!!!!

O DIBA?!!

Malu was an exotic bird.

So was Kitty!

Group shot!

Then Tessa Prieto-Valdes' batch came out with a sparkly dance number.

See Tessa?

They really had a blast!

GO TESSA!

.
I loved this year’s theme: THE POWER OF PLAID!  It has so many deep meanings to it and the fact remains that these women do have the power.  The power to have made significant changes to the way our world is.  I had the chance to see the show one day before the Sunday show and was happy to have been able to get the front row seat!  I just want to share this with all of  you because it was really a fantastic show!   Congratulations MALU and to all my beautiful friends from ASSUMPTION!  You know I am with all of you in more ways than one!  Enjoy the photos!
.

Then the FINALE number!

BRAVO!

They had quite a big group!

Malu Gamboa giving her speech in the end.

Then one more number!

.
My darling Malu wanted to express her appreciation to a few people that made the Velada a success.  So allow me to put in her words what she wants to say to everyone.

It literally took countless rehearsals, planning sessions, trips to Divisoria, and “secret practices” to make our Velada as successful as it was. But it was a fun and joyful ride throughout because of the generosity and perseverance of a core group of girls.
.
Leading our Dream Team is Monette Quiogue, the brains behind our Velada, whose talent and hard work shone with every strike of her keyboard and click of her mouse. Monette put into 3 words how we felt about our Assumption education: Power of Plaid! She also tirelessly prepared all collaterals, articles, compiled photos and write-ups from all the girls. Monette certainly holds the record for the one who slept the least and the one who endeared herself to all. Still ahead for her is the daunting task to publish our Souvenir Program by December which she has already started on with vigor and excitement. Tina Henson, our star performer, was one of the first to dive in deep into all Velada preparations. She made sure we had rehearsal rooms, chic and cheap costumes, and showed us HOW to dance! Natalie Manalo-Dalupan kept us all organized and on-track with her high attention to detail. She also made sure that we started our day right by arranging a moving and solemn Holy Mass. Angelica Cervantes-Dychiao had the most headaches as Over-all Chair of Velada Day. She patiently coordinated all details among the many sponsors and the school administration to ensure that everything went like clockwork.
.
It took a village to make our Velada a success. Each girl truly contributed in her own special and unique way. I would like to especially mention the following batchmates who, from Day 1, embraced the Velada preparations with great enthusiasm and verve! Carmella Gana, Gina Torres-Evangelista, Mia Tambunting-Padilla, Nini Honorio-Lacson, Mia Paterno-Rodriguez, Lia Lesaca, Barbie Torres, Loudette Roman-Tanjuatco, Lynet Villa-real, Valerie Mayor-Sotto, Menchit Aldeguer-Fajardo, Michelle Henson-Tanjuatco, Becky Escalona-Pio de Roda and Pia Barbin-Sycip. These girls rallied, charmed and cajoled their respective classmates to raise funds, participate and make the most of our 25th year Jubilee. Proof of this is the fact that we only had 40 girls during our first rehearsal in August but were over 90-strong on Velada Day!

.

A big Thank You also goes out to the people whose industry, creativity, and patience know no bounds: our Director, 4-time Palanca awardee Floy Quintos, our choreographers, Andrew Ferraris, TinTin Limjap, Cecil Martinez, Lisa Martinez, Ellezer Canlas, our Music Arranger Juan Miguel Salvador, Lights Designer Butch Cruz, Costume Designers Twinkle Zamora and Rajo Laurel for Laurel et Ross, Vocal Arranger Vicky Salvador, Production Manager Chevy Salvador, Stage Team Bobbit Macapagal, Joy Ani and Olga Natividad, Technical Director Paul Domine, and Music Spinner Janice Dee who made us all look great!

.

Assumption High School Class of 1986 also wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to our 59 sponsors and 273 Advertisers.  Their generosity will truly bring joy and much needed assistance to the 3,000 students of the 8 Assumption Mission Schools all over the country.

My Singapore highlights!

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011
Every trip I take, I take home a personal highlight.  Each trip is different, it could be a meal or a dish I tried. It could be a fantastic view or vista. Possibly music that I heard while exploring.   It could also be a conversation or a book I finished reading while traveling.  On my recent trip to Singapore, my highlight was a BILLBOARD!  LOL!   I kid you not!
.

This was my personal highlight in my recent Singapore sojourn.

.
Now don’t give me that funny look till you see what I am talking about!  The billboard is this Male torso that is more than 50 feet tall!  It was on Orchard Road and it just made my day each time I would pass by it.  LOL!  I had to take my friends over just to share with my delight.
.

Divine's hotel was just behind it!

A close up shot!

Had to show Malu! LOL!

Trying my best to get a better view! LOL!

LOVED THIS! It's a super gigantic agate!

Cool chevron pattern!

My other personal highlight was spending time with my dearest Malu Gamboa who has been in Singapore for 2 whole months!  I miss her so very much so having to spend time with her was really special.

What did you think about the billboard?  Nice no?!  LOL!

TJ’s Tijuana Mexican Grill

Monday, June 28th, 2010
Leave it to my dear friend Malu Gamboa to sniff out one of the best Mexican cantinas we have in the metropolis!  After our Legally Blonde show we all were famished!  Malu loves Mexican food!  So I really trust her when it comes to this cuisine.  The place was really close to the Ortigas area and we gave it a go.
Looking at this just makes me hungry!

The place is called TJ’s Tijuana Mexican grill!  It is a quaint little place located in a corner of the City Golf Plaza ( weird name?! LOL!) Our waiter was one of the best that I have ever experienced.  Well informed, gracious and quite charming.  A rarity now a days!  Come to think of it, the entire staff was pretty good!  We Pinoys have the best smiles!
The quaint interiors! They open late till 3am!

We ordered immediately!  Some Nachos, Burito’s ,chicken tenders and a fish taco!  Then we had some lovely frozen margaritas to go with the meal!  The meal arrived within minutes!  Everything was excellent except for the Chicken Tenders which were drenched with fat and the oil oozing out of the basket!  NOT PRETTY!
Nix ready to dive in! LOL!

The rest of the meal was wonderful and we all really enjoyed it!  The waiter gave us extra nachos to boot!  I love this place because when Nix’s margarita was not to his liking the waiter changed it immediately without hesitation.  You don’t get that in Manila too often.  Making this place a winner to me!    If you’re all looking for your Mexican fix then head on over to TJ’s.  I hear they have a branch in Makati, but I forgot the area.
This was a bit hard to eat! Double fried chicken skin with a ton of oil! Avoid this at all cost if you wish to live longer! LOL! I am sure it tastes great but it will clog up your arteries big time!

A yummy and healthy alternative, a grilled fish taco.

Leica’s Wedding Meeting 1

Monday, May 10th, 2010

My dear friend/muse Leica Carpo is getting married this year and I, for one, am so excited for this!  We recently had our first “bridal”meeting in my studio and had so much fun in choosing her colors and theme.

Nix joined our meeting and all of them tried on some hats that we will be giving out to the guests. Just the ladies of course! LOL!

KAWAYAN COVE!

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010
I am seriously considering spending my weekends now in the beach! Nix and I are such beach lovers that every opportunity we have, we try to escape and head out to the beach.

This weekend we were so fortunate to have been invited by our girl friends to spend some time with them. We all decided that we would spend the whole day in Kawayan Cove.

I remembered the cove from when we were younger but it was called Bamboo Beach.  It was the best beach in the area and the cove is now one of the most chic weekend escapes! I am responding so positively to the whole aesthetic of the development.  Everything is so tasteful. I LOVE IT!

PLC107!

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

One of my great passions is interior design.  I spend so much time and money buying magazines and books on the subject, often much more than fashion related items.  Each time I see a gorgeously designed furniture piece, I begin to palpitate and get all so very excited!  This heart palpitation happened again quite recently at the opening of PLC107!

I love the original travertine stone on the building! I wonder where one can get them now?

MASSETO!

Monday, January 18th, 2010
Every now and then a restaurant “ROCKS MY WORLD!”
It does not happen to often and it rarely happens here in Manila!  I am so happy to tell all of you that I recently found a restaurant that “ROCKED MY WORLD!”  LOL!  This restaurant is called  Masseto!
Masseto, the restaurant was named after a wine I believe. I loved the chic logo!

The restaurant is only 3 months old but the level of sophistication and refinement belies its youth.  I had the pleasure of coming to Masseto twice  before writing this entry, once for drinks and a quick bite and the second a full on meal!  Each time I went I was completely blown away!

Happy Birthday JOEY!

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

I celebrated a triple whammy of an evening recently celebrating Thanksgiving, the going away party of my darling Malu and the birthday of my friend Joey Carpo.  We held it in our favorite restaurant, which doubles as our club house:  CIRCULO!  My extended family was there, as I am a proud member of the Carpo clan.  You can call me a Carpo chick anytime.

The menu was absolutely wondeful, lovingly prepared by Chef J Gamboa.  We had a Thanks giving feast which started with pumpkin soup, then we had some beautiful asparagus served with chopped eggs.  Then we had the turkey, which was smoked to perfection.  It was the juiciest turkey that I have ever tasted in like forever. The secret is in the basting, as you inject  this with a super secret sauce.  LOL!  J outdid himself with the stuffing. I am a stuffing kind of guy and his version was heavenly, filled with wild mushrooms, panccetta and other herbs.  I ate one bowl to myself!  YIKES!  The sidings were just as great, the gratin potatoes were so smooth they kill me!
