Long Island City!

Saturday, July 30th, 2011
My cousin lives in Queens, as do most of the Filipino’s in NY!  LOL!  However, they live in Long Island city which is actually just one subway stop away from the city.  I actually don’t get the rap about Long Island city as I have really grown to love this neighborhood.  I love it more now as the museum PS1 opened here a few years ago and my cousin actually lives 15 minutes away from it.
.

This is my cousin Tata. She is a baker and a pastry chef.

This is my cousin Iben. He saves the world! LOL! Seriously though, he is a human rights activist!

Yummy Lunch! Si Nix...naduling na sa sarap! LOL!

Cool Vespa!

COOL! Firetruck!

This is PS1!

.
I love the street art in the area.  Near the PS1 is a building called 5 points.  It is a temple devoted to Grafiti!  We took a visit to take a closer look at this living and breathing work of art in progress. We had a great lunch of Cuban food in Blend.  http://www.blendlic.com/ . Actually it was more of a fusion Latin but since I detest anything ‘fusion”, I won’t call it that!  LOL!  The food was good and quite affordable!  Think 8 dollars a head!  Really a great value.   I think it’s a super fun way to spend an afternoon.  So if you’re looking for an alternative activity in NYC, head on over to Long Island city!

Five points!

On going street art!

It was fascinating to watch!

I love the usage of space for this. I heard though that it will be turned down for a condo! SO SAD!

They need a permit to do this.

Nix taking some images.

COOL!

Iben, Nix and I!

PEACE!

This was my favorite!

It's like Japanese and Samoan art!

Sizzling in New York City!

Friday, July 22nd, 2011
I am so happy to be in one of my most favorite cities in the world!  New York City!   I am here to visit Nix who is in school and is currently doing an internship at the fabulous Interior Design firm of Vicente Wolf.  I am tremendously proud of Nix as this is really a huge achievement.   I love New York in its entirety but the summer here is very challenging and it’s really hot!  Like OVEN hot!
.
Heat is actually my kryptonite. LOL!   I end up slowing down and I get tired easily.  However, I do have to put my Energizer rabbit hat on as there is so much to see and so much to do in the city!  We are staying in SOHO at this really cool boutique hotel called MONDRIAN.  The location could not be more perfect.  Jil Sander is right beside us and the super cool store Opening Ceremony is just 35 paces away!  LOL!  I also love the store called De Vera.  This store is the brain child of a Filipino. It’s such a wonderful store filled with the most interesting items.  This is day 1 of my trip and I do have to apologize if my blogging has been slow.   There is just so many things on the agenda!  LOL!
.

The view outside my hotel window. Happy about the clear blue skies.

I fell in love with the greenhouse concept of Mondrian's restaurant called 9.

The theme was like a modern day princess castle.

Clear chandeliers.

Glass and crystal arrangements. I wonder how dangerous this could be.

The view from my seat.

Above!

The lobby had this Alice in Wonderland kind of feel.

Another view from our room.

Nix in the covered walkway of the hotel.

Inside De Vera.

I love this store.

Fabulous finds.

SOHO!

Twombly-esque!

Street art.

Cool sidewalk details.

Nix was stopped several times about this mesh shirt! It's a winner!

NYC summer scenes.

Street art.

We loved this store called Evolution!

Thoughts on Molecular Gastronomy?

Thursday, July 14th, 2011
I am off to New York in a few days and I am extremely excited!  At this point in my trip, I began researching on things I want to do and most importantly, what restaurants I would like to try and experience.  I ask my foodie friends and expert chefs’ advice and my friend Godfrey sent me this article.
.
Everyone has an opinion on this sensitive matter called “molecular gastronomy“.  Personally, I think it is fun and exciting but I don’t really consider it eating.  LOL!  I think it’s like big boys playing with food and making things interesting.  There is really no harm in what they are doing but at the end of the day, if you think about it, you wouldn’t want to eat  like that constantly?  LOL!  So  what do the Stars of the NYC  food arena think about this?  Read on and let me know what you think?

15 New York Chefs That Don’t Like ‘Molecular Gastronomy’

Want to get a chef all worked up? Just ask him for his thoughts onmolecular gastronomy, the strange cooking style that uses highly scientific techniques and ingredients to make other-worldly, modern cuisine. It’s perhaps more popular in Spain and Chicago (and on Top Chef) than it is in NYC restaurants, but most culinary professionals in this city still have strong opinions about it, even if they don’t cook that kind of food, or eat it often.

Many love the cuisine, but hate the name. Others think it’s pretentious, overrated, or just “over” in general. But for whatever reason, chefs just love to talk about it. Here’s a collection of soundbites from 15 top toques about molecular gastronomy.

15) Wylie Dufresne: “What does it even mean? What does it mean when you say to your wife, ‘Hey we’re going out to dinner tonight. Do you want Chinese, Italian or molecular gastronomy?’” [~EN~]

14) Thomas Keller: “Well, remember, molecular gastronomy is something the media has used as a phrase to identify a new style of food. It’s not something any of the cooks that are doing it have ever said about the food they do.” [Gilded Fork]

13) Chris Santos: “A lot of times people ask me about new trends in cooking, like molecular gastronomy, and I say, ‘Just give me some fire and I’ll give you some good food.’” [Zagat]

12) David Chang: “It’s never going to lose the name molecular. Hippies don’t like being called hippies, but that’s what everyone knows them by.” [Time]

11) Michael Laiskonis: “While I embrace the spirit of what some term ‘molecular gastronomy’ and respect the serious practitioners of that style, I worry about the next generation of cooks coming up that might attach themselves too closely to it out of fashion, while ignoring the more basic fundamentals of cooking.” [RG]

10) Johnny Iuzzini (on being called a “Molecular Gastronomist”): “That is such a horrible term, just because you have a modern style and use some modern techniques does not mean that you are a molecular gastronomist! That term doesn’t sound delicious at all!” [Global Chefs]

9) Anthony Bourdain: ““It doesn’t sound like anything I would be in the mood for. The majority of people do it clumsily or badly. But when you complain about, you’re like my grandparents complaining about the electric guitar.” [TSU]

8) Eric Ripert: “Molecular for molecular, cooking for the technique, I think that is over.” [The Feast]

7) Daniel Boulud: “Molecular gastronomy is interesting for the mind, but not always interesting for the soul. It’s very much like conceptual art. It triggers many senses, which are not known by yourself, but at the same time it doesn’t leave you wanting to come back.” [Vancouver Sun]

6) Jimmy Bradley: “It’s not for me to say, but you won’t see me messing around with it.” [RG]

2011_dan_kluger1.jpg5) Dan Kluger: “I think there’s certainly a place for molecular gastronomy and really high end cuisine. But for me, making great tasting food is why I’m here.” [Star Chefs]

2010_04_lionmenu1.jpg4) John Delucie: “Molecular gastronomy is lost on me. I don’t want to eat xantham gum and I am not captivated by a technology that’s gives us bacon ice cream. I prefer chocolate.” [RG]

2011_alainducasse_molcular.jpg3) Alain Ducasse: “I prefer to be able to identify what I’m eating. I have to know. It’s `wow’ effect food, virtual food. If we were surrounded by these restaurants, we would be in trouble.” [Bloomberg]

2011_joel_molecular1.jpg2) Joel Robuchon: “Too many chefs are attracted to molecular gastronomy… It’s not the kind of cuisine that should be important, with all the additives. I know I was really the first one to make it famous, but I have complete control of what I’m doing.” [NYP]

2011_cny_eddie_huang11.jpg1) Eddie Huang: “Me and @No7restaurantlove molecular gastronomy but only if it involves astronaut ice cream.” [Twitter]

I have been busy working here in NYC and in my spare time I come to a couple of places that spark my interest.
Very cool interiors from the indoor Market

Most of the time these center around the food or the restaurant that I like to try of my friends recommend.  You all know I love brunch and this for me works because I end up eating two meals a day instead of one!  However I know this is not the healthiest way to live but I still love it!  Will just work out more-  in this case take less cabs and just walk more!  LOL!
.
Well my friends started working on the area where we would love to be in  and then have brunch in that area.  I always love the Meat packing district because the stores there are really nice and they are just really interesting.  We walked through the Market are which was always cool and ended up in the old FLORENT…which was one of my favorite diners when I was a student!  It is now called GANSEVOORT 69 named after the address it is at with Telephone number 212-6910069.
The Gansevoort interiors. Its a cleaned up version of florent but I miss the grit and I definitely miss the food!

Honestly,  I would not bother making a reservation because it was not really that great!  I mean the food was normal and nothing  really to blog about!  LOL!  Although the staff were really nice but the food was a waste of time.

I am so very proud of SASS!

Monday, December 14th, 2009

I just wanted to share with you a very special video.  This is a video from a human rights summit at the United Nations in New York!  The opening speech was done by a very dear childhood friend of Nix.  Her name is Sass Rogando Sassot.  A leading voice and light of transgendered rights in the Philippines.  I have met  her on several occasions and each time I meet her, she really never ceases to amaze me.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrOc6CIQjtc[/youtube]

I implore you to listen to what she has to say as perhaps this will enlighten your thoughts and views on our transgendered sisters.  Her speech brought me to tears.  It is important for all of us to open our hearts and minds to the mysteries  of all forms of lifestyles and orientations.  Sass’s words are beautiful just as beautiful as she is!

BRAVO SASS!

New York Pilgrimage!

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Greetings from one of my favorite places in the entire planet! NEW YORK CITY! I just love the energy of the place and I come here to energize.  I arrived at night and I decided to walk around first to feel the cool autumn air!  Thankfully, it was not super cold as I expected.  My brother and sisters arrived ahead of me and this is like a reunion of sorts. My siblings and I have not traveled together for a really long time, so I am pretty excited about this. I will be trying my best to update my blog everyday, since there is so much to share and so little time!  So far, these are my day’s highlights!

Walked around the city to get my bearings.

Save Venice!

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Did you know that the beautiful Italian state of Venice is sinking?  Scientists are now scrambling to find a cure to this very sad phenomenon, hence the need for awareness and a whole lot of fund raising.  Philanthropy is the new black!  LOL!

My ever reliable New York correspondent was right in the thick of things when he sent me photos from the “Save Venice” masked ball!  The glamorous crown came in full force, wearing the most beautiful masks.  This is inspiring….Hmmm?  I wonder if we could have a massive fundraiser to help save the beautiful churches all over our islands that are in dire need of restoration?  It’s something to think about, isn’t it?

Young Fellows Frick Gala

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

My New York Correspondent PJ Pascual is one busy, busy boy!  He just emailed me photos of the recently held FRICK Young Fellows Gala. I really enjoyed looking at the dresses and seeing how fabulous all these women were looking!  This is a really cool and prestigious event gathering the young socialites of New York.  In many ways, this is like the real life GOSSIP GIRLS, without the drama…hmmm…Maybe just a little bit of drama? LOL!

Our very own Monique Lhuillier co-chaired the event with Ivanka Trump.  There were so many beautiful women in lovely gowns.  Most notable for me was the gown of Lauren Remington Platt.  She was wearing Nina Ricci.  I loved how fresh she looked.

A Toast to Jason Wu!

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

My New York correspondent PJ Pascual is one cool cat!  He gets invited to the best parties!  The most recent one is the party given to one of Michelle Obama‘s fave designers, Jason Wu.  PJ says that it was one of the best events of the season.

Jason Wu (center) with PJ

There were so many fun people there, like Anne Slowey, the fashion director for Elle Magazine. She has this show called STYLISTA…..Confession time, I actually watched the entire first season in 2 days!  It was such an awful, awful show but I could not stop watching it! LOL!

Anne Slowey

Jason Wu was in a dapper grey suit which made him look like a cute Asian Mormon.  LOL!  His muse Olivia Chanecaille was there too, in a deep blue dress, as well as Bergdorf‘s main buyer Roopal Patel.  The CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year Philip Crangi was present too, as he did the accessories for Jason’s show this season.
