The HOL Team @ THE PREVIEW BALL!

Monday, July 5th, 2010

I pride myself in having the best team in the world!  I love my House of Laurel team because they are not just employees.  To me they are my family!  We see each other day in and day out often longer than we see our own immediate family so in many ways the bonding we have at work translates in my mind as what families are all about.

I was super excited to find out that we would be all here for the Preview Best dressed ball!  Last year we could not make it because we all were in Tokyo.  However this year we would be present and in full force!    I decided to use my infamous insect collection as a starting point for our homage to the late Alexander McQueen.  His bold use of cut and graphic detail was perfect for this.   I then asked everyone to choose a dress from the collection and we all made them.  The make up would be done by my sister Gela and I wanted to have this graphic quality to it. So we used heavy black paint to color block our faces. LOL!

This was the make up peg that I quickly sketched out for the team.

The ACCP Party!

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

My goodness!  It’s like I am on a party overdrive!  LOL!  I certainly love the holidays, it seems you never run out of parties to go too!

My most recent one was an Asian Cultural Council Christmas cocktail party hosted by Patrick Reyno.  It is always such a joy to visit Patrick’s pad, as it is like going to  a museum!  LOL!  No wall is left bare!  Every available surface is decked with the most modern voices in the South East Asian art scene.  Patrick is one serious collector!  I am just happy to be invited!  Just being there ignites my creative juices.  The party was short and sweet as we all had other affairs that evening!  No rest for the wicked!

LOL!

A Grown-up Prom!

Monday, November 30th, 2009

I recently was invited to a beautiful ball and I wanted the share with all of you how lovely everybody looked.  I really look forward to this annual event because everyone really dresses up and literally have a ball.  In many ways, it’s like a grown up PROM. LOL!

Prom has always been special to me, because this is how I really started as a designer.  My classmates would come to me and ask me to design their dresses and I would tear the sheets out of my notebooks and draw their gowns.  This spirit is what I cherish and try to capture up to this day.  The ball was held at the super chic Makati Shangri-la hotel!  I had a really great time that evening. What is not to love?  There were so many beautiful people dressed so elegantly and the bubbles just kept on coming!  LOL!  Enjoy the photos!

The minute I arrived for cocktails, I spotted the ILONGGO contingent in full force! I consider them my family in the south! BIG HUGS all around!

Tessa & Grace’s Birthday!

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

It was the birthday of two very special women (Tessa Valdes and Grace Poe) in my circle of friends a few nights ago and we had a really lovely dinner at our “club house”/CIRCULO restaurant. The entire evening was filled with joyous celebration with the most important ingredients: great food, amazing friends and a truckload of laughter. I am blessed to have these women as my friends.

At first glance, these two women could not be more different from each other: Tessa with her exuberant personality and a dress sensibility that gravitates to the Rococo but amplified even more by  tenfold, while Grace has this quiet demeanor and a Zen-like minimalist sense of aesthetic.  However, the closer you get to them, you realize that they are actually so alike because they are both pillars of strength and fortitude.  Happy Birthday, my darlings!

Happy Birthday, Randy O!

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

One of my dear friends in the biz, Randy Ortiz, celebrated his birthday recently. He hosted an intimate dinner in his super cool flat in Makati. I always love hanging out with Randy as he is one of  the funniest people I know. We have been friends from the start of my career. Randy is well-loved by all of us! Happy Birthday Randy!

Paella! I love how classic the party spread was. It reminds me of my parents parties. The food was so good. I did not get the number of the caterer but if my memory serves me right the party was catered by the pepper mill. I must research on them, as the food was stellar!

Children’s Birthday Parties

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

The last 3 parties that I have attended have all been children’s birthday parties! I see a trend coming along and I for one am loving every minute of it! What is not to love? I mean, everyone loves children party food, right? The fried corn dogs, the spaghetti with the sweet tomato sauce and the required chopped hot dogs.. What about the creamy macaroni and cheese? And do not forget the pork BBQ! Then comes the games and entertainment. Finally, the loot bags, how I love loot bags!

This brings us all back to our youth, right? The thing with children’s parties nowadays is that they are truly major events. I mean, there is a virtual industry going on serving this kind of parties! Is it just me, or are things getting extra fancy? I am not complaining, for when my niece Alix turned 4 a few weeks ago, she had a giant inflatable castle that had a trampoline in the center. The kids were like having so much fun and I got jealous…so I tried it out! LOL! I jumped up and down for like 10 minutes and this seriously wiped me out! LOL! Ahhh…to be a kid again.

The most recent party I attended was MAJOR! My friend Ronald Pineda who, trust me, is a tycoon in his own right, celebrated the first birthday of his daughter in high style! His daughter Leona Simone was turning 1 and she had a Barney themed party! Even her gown was in Barney purple! I had a super fun time! I guess it’s really the sign of the times when the most exciting thing in your calendar is a children’s birthday party!  LOL!

Leona Simone's birthday party had crowns for everyone! Making each guest feel like royalty.

The Under the Sea Bash!

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

I just received my e-invite to one of the most exciting parties that will be happening in the metro!  It’s the invite to the wedding anniversary bash of Dennis and Tessa Valdes!  The invite alone is something so unique and striking that I cannot wait to see the actual thing!  I imagine this to be like one of those pop-up books that I loved as a child.   The party will be held inside a giant aquarium!  Tessa and Dennis really hosts the most unique parties; when they got married, they did a medieval themed wedding.  They even had hamsters and dogs in church!  OH MY!  I am so looking forward to this!  I just wanted to share this with all of you!

VALENTINO: The Last Emperor

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

For me, Valentino is a god!  I have been hearing about this documentary movie about him for over a year now and I’M DYING to see it!  It just had its premiere a few days ago.  I saw a preview on the documentary some time ago and it was just mesmerizing! I am praying that it goes to DVD fast so I can see it!  In the meantime, my NYC correspondent PJ sent me photos from the movie premiere that he was invited to!  I would just have collapsed if I met VALENTINO!  LOL!

FLOW #3

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

My favorite couple in Manila invited me to a cocktail party last night and I just had to be there.  My favorite couple is none other that Chito Vijandre and Ricky Toledo!  They are two of the most talented and creative Filipinos around.  They have been a major style influence in the metropolis since the very start.  I am a fan of these two, and they are simply awesome!

The cocktail party was for the launch of their newest creative adventure as “curators” for the art magazine called Flow.  I was so happy that they invited me because I have seen this magazine on the stands but I really never knew what it was!  I never had the chance to open it.  Now I want to get my hands on all 3 issues!  LOL!  The magazine is very good and it has a real pulse on the local art scene.  The cocktail itself was fun a mixture of very interesting people: artists. designers, social figures and the like!

I really enjoyed the food they served. It was really yummy!  All in all, it was  great party!  You would not expect anything less from Chito and Ricky!

The curators for the evening: Chito Vijandre and Ricky Toledo! They are the owners of the fabulous stores FIRMA, FELICITY and AC+632. Don't you just adore the patterns of their shirts!

They had an exhibit of the art work that was in the new magazine! Among the art works this really caught my eye! It is done by the artist called BRUIHN! I was in awe of the flawlessness of his brush stroke! I love the almost like flemish like lighting but with a true pinoy sense of humor!

A Toast to Jason Wu!

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

My New York correspondent PJ Pascual is one cool cat!  He gets invited to the best parties!  The most recent one is the party given to one of Michelle Obama‘s fave designers, Jason Wu.  PJ says that it was one of the best events of the season.

Jason Wu (center) with PJ

There were so many fun people there, like Anne Slowey, the fashion director for Elle Magazine. She has this show called STYLISTA…..Confession time, I actually watched the entire first season in 2 days!  It was such an awful, awful show but I could not stop watching it! LOL!

Anne Slowey

Jason Wu was in a dapper grey suit which made him look like a cute Asian Mormon.  LOL!  His muse Olivia Chanecaille was there too, in a deep blue dress, as well as Bergdorf‘s main buyer Roopal Patel.  The CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year Philip Crangi was present too, as he did the accessories for Jason’s show this season.
