Next to Normal!

Monday, November 9th, 2009

I am a Broadway junkie!  When I am in New York, I try to catch a minimum of 3 shows at least! On this trip, I only had the chance to see three:  Hair, Billy Elliot and Next to Normal.  Among the three, my absolute favorite favorite was Next to Normal.  The story was about a suburban American family and how they deal with mental illness.  The music was so beautiful and haunting.  I loved how they did the staging and the flow of the story was so flawless.  I do hope that all of you get the chance to see this wonderful musical.  Billy Elliot was my second favorite; I daresay that the play was far more superior than the movie.  I was close to tears in several scenes.  The music was created by no other than Sir Elton John!   I loved it!  If you’re in town and you can only have one play to see, make it Next to Normal!  It’s worth it!

Spelling Bee!

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I am probably the worst speller in the entire world!  It has always been a problem for me.  Each time I watch spelling bees,  I find myself in a state of panic.  My palms become clammy and I break into a cold sweat!  Imagine all this tension transformed into a musical!  LOL!   I saw this musical around 3 years ago and it was FANTASTIC!  I am so happy that the play now will be showing in Manila.

The play is brought to us by Atlantis Productions and directed by one of the most talented young men I know – Bobby Garcia!  I also have extra news:  I will be a guest in the show!  HORRORS!  I think my date is on April 3.  YIKES!  I am already shaking in my boots!  I encourage all of you to come and watch the musical.  It will be really worth it!

LET THE SPELLING BEGIN!

The competition is intense. The words are hilarious. Let the spelling begin! The Tony Award winning Musical THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE opens March 20th and runs until April 4th at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.

SPELLING BEE centers around a fictional spelling bee in Putnam County, New York. Six kids in the throes of puberty face off in the battle of their lives. They compete against each other as well as members of the audience. Three adults help adjudicate the proceedings: a nostalgic former spelling bee winner, a mildly insane Vice Principal and The Official Comfort Counselor completing his community service to the state of New York. SPELLING BEE has a Tony Award winning book by Rachel Sheinkin and Music and Lyrics by Tony Award winner William Finn.

No two SPELLING BEE shows will be alike, as SPELLING BEE will feature “starring roles” each night for two volunteer audience members and two surprise celebrity guest spellers.

Atlantis Productions gathers a stellar cast of theatre veterans Cathy Azanza-Dy, Pheona Baranda, Johann Dela Fuente, Rycharde Everley, Carla Guevarra-Laforteza, Noel Rayos, Felix Rivera, Thea Tadiar and Joel Trinidad, who have all worked with Atlantis in the past.

SPELLING BEE is directed by Bobby Garcia, Choreography by Chari Arespacochaga, Set Design by Tuxqs Rutaquio, Lighting Design by Johnsy Reyes, Costume Design by Twinkle Zamora, Vocal Coaching by ManMan Angsico and Musical Direction by Jojo Malferari.
